Roads & Grounds Trades Specialist Lead I - Facilities & Servcies 13556
The Facilities Management unit of Facilities & Services at West Virginia University is seeking applications for a Roads & Grounds Trades Specialist Lead I position. Under direction of the Trade Specialist Lead II, this position shall provide leadership and training to a group of five to ten employees. This position will also perform skilled landscape gardening tasks, repair, and maintenance of roads and sidewalks.
In order to be successful in this position, the ideal candidate will:
Function as a team leader, providing guidance to Landscape Worker Lead, Landscape Workers, Campus Service Workers Leads, Campus Service Workers, and any other support personnel as required. Follow procedures and makes work assignments to those individuals assigned to the crew to ensure work is completed in a timely fashion ensuring proper quality and quantity. Inspect completed work assignments to ensure quality control. Ensure that proper safety procedures are used while performing job duties.
Receive work orders. Interface with Trade Specialist Lead II, Managers, and requesting party to finalize project needs and scope. Assist supervisor with multi-craft projects related to overall work assignments. Communicate work schedules and goals to employees and customer, creating efficiency and a timely completion of assigned tasks.
Provide continual inspection of assigned area to ensure maintenance is completed on schedule; recommend to the Supervisor major repair needs; assists Supervisor in updating deferred maintenance.
Individual will maintain knowledge of state, federal, and local codes and requirements pertaining to maintenance and construction. Individual will interact with contractors, vendors, and engineers as needed.
Operate and maintain all grounds maintenance equipment such as trucks, tractors, hydroseeder, tree spade, aerial lift truck, larger seeders, riding mowers, snow removal equipment, skid loaders, end loaders, and tiltbed trucks.
Operate and maintain hand power tools and equipment such as weedeaters, lawnmowers, roto-tillers, chain saws, fertilizer spreaders, small seeder, sod cutters, walk-behind sweepers, vacs, and turf renovaters.
Assist with landscape construction by: operating jackhammers and other related equipment to remove broken sidewalks; mixing, pouring, and spreading concrete, asphalt, gravel, and other materials; digging holes and trenches to assist in the preparation of irrigation and drainage systems; and excavating and preparing grounds prior to initiation of construction projects. Assist in the repair and replacement of utility lines by using hand tools, power tools, and grounds equipment.
Work Hours: Monday-Friday; 6 a.m.-2 p.m.
Pay Grade: 14, WVU provides competitive wages for its employees, and takes experience and related education into consideration when determining appropriate salary.
High School diploma and up to 18 months beyond high school training in horticulture, vocational agriculture, or equivalent experience.
At least two (2) years of experience in general landscaping and grounds maintenance.
Valid Driver's License.
Must have valid West Virginia Certified Public Applicator License for turf and ornamental chemical use within 6 months of hire.
Must pass respirator fit-testing and comply with all requirements contained within the WVU Respiratory Protection Program.
Physical demands include:
Physical exertion required in lifting 50 pounds frequently.
Lifting of weights in excess of 100 pounds occasionally.
Able to work on feet for extended periods daily.
Climbing, stooping, bending, working from ladders daily.
Working in confined spaces daily.
