The Facilities Management unit of the Division of Facilities & Services at West Virginia University is seeking applications for an Assistant Supervisor within the Roads and Grounds department. This position will oversee the daily activities in relocation of offices, classrooms, and set-ups for special events by: performing duties associated with a CSW-Lead and CSW positions; ensuring departmental personnel are aware of schedules for moves. Trains new employees on proper techniques and operation of equipment; adjusting daily task assignments to meet changes in needs and priorities; and informing supervisor of problem areas. Responds to special request and emergencies by reassigning personnel as needed.
In order to be successful in this position, the ideal candidate will:
Acts as an on-the-job trainer of other employees in performance of assigned tasks. Is a source of experience and expert guidance in the Labor Department. Responsible for maintaining knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment to satisfactory levels.
Is knowledgeable and experienced in setting up for special events such as Commencement, concerts, President's Office events, academic requests, registration, etc. Includes set-up of tents, staging, special platforms, bleachers, tables, chairs, etc.
Provides daily reports on actual progress versus projected progress to Supervisor. Maintains the original scope of project to ensure project cost control. Informs Supervisor of needed discipline and performance problems. Ensures that work group processes all work requests, material requisitions, weekly reports, and invoices necessary to complete assignments according to Facilities Management operation.
Acts as an Assist Supervisor Grounds and Labor while performing duties associated with a CSW-Lead and CSW position. Follows procedures and makes work assignments to those individuals assigned to the crew to ensure work is completed in a timely fashion ensuring proper quality and quantity. Inspects completed work assignments of the Campus Service Worker Lead and Campus Service Worker to ensure quality control. Ensures that proper safety procedures are used while performing job duties.
Receives and assigns work orders. Interfaces with Work Control, Supervisor, Managers, and requesting party to finalize needs and scope. Responsible for filling out work requests accurately as needed in completing job assignments. Communicates work schedules and goals to employees and customer, creating efficiency and a timely completion of assigned tasks.
Provides continual inspection of assigned area to ensure assignments are completed on schedule. Shall conduct frequent inspections of all work orders to insure all work is completed in a proper and orderly manner in compliance with WVU standards. Shall keep employee time records for work request to ensure it is accurately do documented.
Operates motor vehicle (i.e. car, box van, pick-up truck, fork lift, front loader, small dump truck) to transport people, to deliver/receive surplus for inventory control. To deliver, receive, or remove surplus materials for shops and equipment throughout the campus and community and statewide. Unloads and stores supplies, rotating stock and equipment at various job sites. Establishes and maintains inventory of department throughout institutional buildings, warehouse, or stockroom on equipment, e.g. tables, chairs, tents, staging, platforms, etc.
Maintains and cares for institutional grounds by: mowing, seeding, and aerating lawns and turf, trimming and edging around trees, flower beds, buildings, and walkways, watering lawns, shrubs, and ornamental gardens during dry periods, removing and disposing of debris throughout grounds areas on campus. Removes snow from sidewalks, steps, roads, and parking lots by means of hand tools, power brooms, tractors, and trucks. Spreading de-icers and abrasives on all public passageways as needed.
Under the direction of the Tree Surgeon shall perform general tree maintenance as required. Shall assist in the planting, staking, and removal of trees as needed.

High school diploma, GED or equivalent
At least two (2) years of experience in the following:
Directly related work experience including custodial, labor, and grounds assignments within a commercial or industrial setting
Directly related Lead or Supervisor experience
At least one (1) year of experience operating small dump trucks, box vans, forklifts, etc
Commercial Driver's License preferred
Physical coordination and demands:
Long periods of standing, walking, climbing, stooping and bending daily
Moving furniture and unloading supplies daily
Working from ladders and confined spaces daily
Lifting items weighing up to 100 pounds daily
Pushing/shoving dumpsters to sanitation vehicle weighiing 500 - 1,000 pounds
