Description of Duties
The incumbent will maintain care and treatment of lab animals according to standard facility operating procedures and will ensure compliance with federal guidelines for the care and use of laboratory animals. Specific duties include:
Performing daily health check and updating cage check sheets
Following standard procedures and operating laboratory animal equipment, including cage washer, dry heat sterilizer, vacuum pumps, bottle filler and water quality control system.
Loading and unloading of cage washer, dumping and filling cages
Changing cages in assigned rooms, top off food, charge water ports, move mice to clean cages, change assigned feeders
Purchasing laboratory equipment, supplies and feed
Assisting with research-related activities
Performing other duties as assigned.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
Requires a High School Diploma/GED and at least one year experience in a laboratory murine animal facility supporting a research project.
Note: Additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
Bachelor’s degree in Animal Sciences or related area is preferred. Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) cerification preferred, but not required. Candidate will be encouraged to obtain their ALAT certification within 2 years of hire.
