This position will report to the Publishing Services Coordinator to facilitate digital publishing in the libraries. Work with the OER & Student Success Librarian to assist and support faculty in publishing open textbooks. Assist faculty who are planning to adopt, adapt, or create open educational resources by providing copy editing support and formatting of open textbooks. Create complex formatting and designs for print and digital publications, maintain a working knowledge of complex publishingprocesses, answer technical questions and provide support for related work in other library units. Attend and engage in campus events regarding library publishing services and open educational resources and provide public demonstrations of library publishing services to various internal and external audiences. Assist with and promote MakeCentral services and other library units.
Open Educational Resources (OER) Responsibilities
Consult with OER and Student Success Librarian on OER projects.
Implement style guides that the OER Librarian will create for open textbook publishing.
Provide copy editing support to faculty and instructional staff looking to adopt, adapt, or create OER material for their courses to incorporate into new teaching materials.
Copy edit and proofread digital content, reading through the text correcting errors with grammar, punctuation, or sentence structure.
Follow and implement the appropriate style guide for the project.
Read the text from a layman’s perspective and make sure the content is clear, concise, and coherent.
Ensure that citations are accurate and consistent.
Check licensing permissions on media or other non-textual elements.
Provide direct support and training materials for authoring content in supported tools such as Pressbooks.
Develop OER-related publishing services such as support with authoring tools and content delivery platforms, version control, search engine optimization, usage statistics, or print-on-demand.
Stay abreast of trends and issues in librarianship, OER, and affordable course content.
Preserve MSU brand identity and editorial integrity.
Maintain an understanding of open resources and repositories available.
Use a high degree of discrimination and independent judgment in the area of copyright compliance.
Promote MSU Libraries’ OER program and Publishing Services by attending and engaging in on or off campus events.
Maintain and update the OER website.
Special duties may include: data collection, analysis and reporting; committee service; operations oversight in the absence of the supervisor.
Assist with MSU Libraries’ MakeCentral and Publishing Services
Use Adobe Creative Cloud and Microsoft Office software to format, design, and print book interiors and covers for print and digital publications
Work with library patrons to prepare book interior and cover files for printing
Operate complex publishing equipment to facilitate book and booklet publication
Provide public demonstrations of library publishing services
Improve skills by attending professional development sessions as directed

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge normally acquired by completing a four-year college degree program; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in an office setting; experience with database, spreadsheet, word processing software; editorial publishing experience, specifically editing, digital publishing, layout, and design; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
A four-year college degree; recent experience in an academic library; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Two to five years of copy editing and fact checking experience. Program planning and procedure development experience. Experience in academic copyright permissions and print production coordination; strong technical abilities and proficiency with Microsoft Office Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; Acrobat Professional; ability to identify and resolve problems exercising excellent judgment; strong interpersonal skills; excellent written and verbal communication skills; demonstrated success in handling varied, multiple, and competing project priorities; ability to work both independently and cooperatively in a team; strong customer service skills. Experience with academic publishing, open educational resources, WordPress and/or PressBooks, LaTeX formatting, Adobe Creative Cloud and Microsoft Office 365. Ability to juggle multiple long-term projects on schedule. The candidate should have strong customer service, communication, and grammatical skills, a willingness to learn and adapt to the changing needs of the position, and the ability to create and facilitate new programs and procedures. Candidates should have a good understanding of copyright and open licensing options.
