The University of Maryland School of Social Work is currently recruiting for a Public Relations Specialist to provide strategic marketing, communication, and public relations expertise and guidance to the Promise Heights Initiative. This position will be responsible for communicating and promoting the mission and vision of Promise Heights, both internally and externally. External stakeholders include local and national media, funders, local and state legislators, and community residents. Reporting to the Promise Heights Executive Director, this position will be responsible for creating, distributing, and maintaining print, and digital communications; generating related content for the website; maintaining ongoing media outreach; developing annual progress reports; and promoting the brand and reputation of Promise Heights.

Researches, writes, edits, and summarizes public information materials. Distributes information materials to print, broadcast, and on-line media outlets.
Reacts to and/or interacts with media representatives to develop and maintain relationships, pitch university programs and activities, and respond to media inquiries.
Spots trends in the media to keep abreast of current issues and opportunities to place university members as experts and ensure stories are being directed to the most appropriate outlets.
Manages standard public relations situations, such as writing and editing for Promise Heights including reports, key messaging, success stories, marketing materials, web content, e-blasts, and range of fundraising materials.
Supports special event management through promoting press releases, speaker and media coordination and post-event recaps.
Oversees creation and distribution of communication and development materials including writing, design, photographs, and video. Materials for use by staff and leadership.
Develop relationships and maintain contact with program staff.
Organizes and maintains database files on assigned materials. Build and maintain a robust repository of photography and videos to document program implementation.
Provide editorial and design support for visually appealing presentations, publications, and other program technical documents.
Craft thoughtful and compelling messages that communicate program goals and accomplishments both to the public and internal staff.
Plan and coordinate public relations and marketing activities to increase visibility of program leadership.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Education: Bachelor's Degree in journalism, communications, public relations, or related field. Experience: Two (2) years of experience in marketing, public relations, communications, or media, public or client relations. Other: May consider a combination of directly related experience and education.

The Hiring Range for this position is high $40,000s to low $60,000s, commensurate with education and experience.
