RESEARCH SCIENTIST , Mechanical Engineering , to conduct research on approaches to engine combustion and their potential benefits in the Sloan Automotive Laboratory. Will work independently and in small groups on novel applications for new engine combustion processes; design, fabricate, and test facilities that enable the exploration of the operation and the potential for such new concepts; develop and use computer-based simulations and relevant physically based models that quantify the processes occurring within such new combustion devices; engage with sponsors and potential sponsors; participate in proposal preparation; work with and assist with training undergraduate and graduate students and postdoctoral scholars; and publish findings and present at academic conferences.
REQUIRED : Ph.D. in mechanical engineering with background in the thermal/fluids sciences and emphasis on practical applications; at least four years' post-Ph.D. experience in engineering science research and on potential applications; expertise in relevant experimental and computational methods related to combustion engine research; experience with instrumentation encompassing measurement of pressure, temperature, exhaust gas composition, fluid flow, power, and torque; knowledge of fuels and standard engine and fuels tests; strong organizational and planning skills; ability to contribute effectively to cross-functional product and system development, improvement, and troubleshooting teams; experience in collaborative work with other engineers and scientists.
