Cantor Arts Center boasts a proud and venerable history. Conceived with the founding of Stanford University in 1891, the museum opened in 1894, serving the University and the broader community. The 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake damaged the museum, necessitating its closure to the public. In 1995 groundbreaking for a major new wing and restoration of the historic building began in earnest with the revitalized museum opening in 1999 as the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Center for the Visual Arts. The Cantor offers approximately 50,000 square feet of exhibition space, as well as classrooms and other study spaces for students and faculty. The Cantor's collection spans 5,000 years and includes more than 38,000 works of art from around the globe. Collections include art from Europe and America, both historical and contemporary; Asia, primarily Japan and China; Africa; Oceania; historical works from Mexico, Central America, and South America; the Stanford Family Collection; and public sculpture on the Stanford campus.
Administer, support, and manage operational projects and overall visitor experience programs under general supervision.
Independently implement, administer and evaluate day-to-day activities of the Visitor Experience Program by identifying and executing tasks and objectives, making recommendations that impact policies and programs, and assigning resources to achieve the goals of the program.
Work closely with Visitor Services Manager to ensure appropriate staffing, tools, and resources necessary to provide excellent customer services through staff and volunteers.
Ensure retail functions are at operational capacity, including catalogue sales and membership sales.
As the HR liaison, serve as a resource on human resources issues, effectively communicate human resources policies, and explain human resources processes and procedures. Resolve basic issues as appropriate. Refer other issues to human resources manager or supervisor for resolution.
Support and coordinate employment activities (transactions and documentation). Assist in recruiting process, onboarding and exit process of staff.
Oversee the internal financial processing of invoices and vendor payments..
May participate in development of budgets, monitor, and approve expenditures. May perform limited forecasting and provide recommendations that determine the budget.
Manage and execute all museum level reporting for AAMD, AAM, and other museums projects such as strategic planning and workflow improvement.
Partner with Deputy Director on museum projects, such as furnishings, equipment, and other resources on a project-by-project basis.
May direct staff to perform various tasks and assignments. Supervise the Manager of Visitor Services and the Finance Associate
Education & Experience
Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.
Demonstrated ability to prioritize own work and multi-task.
Demonstrated excellent organizational skills.
Demonstrated ability to take initiative and ownership of projects.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Ability to routinely and independently exercise sound judgment in making decisions
Demonstrated experience working independently and as part of a team.
Relevant subject matter knowledge.
Ability to direct the work of others, for jobs requiring supervision.
Rarely lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh 11-20 pounds.
