The Assistant Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is an accomplished professional who will assist in the leadership of the University of Maryland School of Social Work's (UMSSW) diversity and anti-oppression efforts and help guide the achievement of a new standard for inclusive excellence. As a member of the Dean's executive leadership team, the Assistant Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will have a strategic position responsible for promoting and enabling an inclusive environment for faculty, students, and staff while championing organizational change. The Assistant Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will report to the Dean and work closely with and support relevant efforts of the Diversity Implementation Group; the Diversity and Anti-oppression (DAO) Committee; the Faculty Executive Committee; and the Associate Deans for Administration, Student Affairs, and Academic Affairs. The position will also represent the UMSSW as a member of the University of Maryland, Baltimore President's Diversity Advisory Council (DAC). The DAC provides recommendations to the President promoting the University's commitment to diversity, inclusion and equity.
This is a 12 month faculty appointment. If a candidate has a record of scholarship meriting Clinical Assistant Professor rank (rather than the Clinical Instructor rank), the rank is negotiable.
Essential Duties: Strategic Leadership
Assume a leadership role for building and fostering diversity, equity, inclusion, social justice, anti-racism, anti-discrimination, restoration, reconciliation, and accessibility at the UMSSW as defined by UMSSW's community of students, faculty, staff, alumni and community partners.
Provide leadership for and coordinate the development of a strategic diversity, equity and inclusion plan including various objectives and activities already underway at the UMSSW.
Guide practices and create opportunities to define, assess, and promote inclusive excellence, access, and cultural proficiency.
Facilitate participatory strategic planning and create mechanisms for transparency in implementation.
Effectively promote organizational change.
Training and Instruction
Participate as an instructor in MSW diversity courses (not anticipated to be more than 20% time) and potentially provide course coordination.
Support faculty and staff development programs focused on social justice, anti-racism, anti-discrimination, racial healing, and culturally humble conduct.
Work with colleagues in Human Resources, Student Affairs and across campus to ensure diversity and inclusion education is embedded in all training programs for SSW student and employees.
Establish and help leverage the gathering of key metrics to track progress toward diversity milestones and a climate of greater inclusion.
Develop measures for accountability.
Engage key stakeholders such as alumni, students and community members in addition to faculty and staff when providing feedback related to changes and action items.
Advise and collaborate with faculty and staff regarding student issues and concerns.
Actively demonstrate strong communication skills that preserve confidentiality and foster open and inclusive communication among all UMSSW stakeholder groups and varying levels of these groups.
Serve as advisor and resource for faculty, staff and students through facilitation, education and coaching.
Master's degree in social work, social justice, counseling, higher education, or related field required. Experience teaching in the area of social work and diversity. 3 - 5 years of progressively responsible diversity and inclusion related experience in an academic environment is strongly preferred.
Knowledge of contemporary issues of inclusion, anti-racism, anti-oppression, social justice, diversity, access, and equity, including the current scholarship and pedagogical approaches that inform and address these issues. Experience in best practices of recruitment, hiring, promotion and retention of faculty, staff and students from diverse backgrounds. Experience in creating and implementing programs--preferably equity and inclusion programs.
Skill and experience in strategic planning and implementation.
