The Vice Provost for Graduate Research and Dean of the Graduate College reports to the Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. The Vice Provost is a senior level position with the expectation that the individual in this role will serve with a high degree of autonomy, discretion, integrity and collegiality. The Vice Provost functions as a representative of the Provost and is often authorized to act on behalf of the Provost. The Vice Provost assists the Provost in implementing the University's vision, mission and strategic priorities in the areas of graduate education and graduate research. The Vice Provost provides overall academic leadership of the Graduate College. The Vice Provost engages directly with the academic deans, the Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development, the Vice Chancellor for Information Technology and others to develop and execute policies and procedures to enhance research and graduate education.
The dean is responsible for providing a vision, direction and oversight in support of the University's strategic plan. Other administrative responsibilities include: managing and allocating financial resources; program development and planning; evaluation and assessment; accreditation oversight; faculty and staff development; faculty hiring, appointments and reappointments, promotion and tenure and post-tenure review; developing strong relationships with other Colleges and external communities; and enforcing academic policies and regulations.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit:
This unit advances the university's vision, mission and strategic plan in relation to graduate research, scholarship, graduate studies and creative activity; works closely with the Senior Vice Provost and the Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development; works with the faculty, Deans, Associate Deans, Department Chairs, and the Director of the Center for Teaching Excellence to elevate and expand research and scholarship, including the scholarship of discovery, integration, and application and graduate student research; provides oversight for the graduate college, including recruitment initiatives, curricular initiatives, program assessment, budget and funding allocations, and supervision of staff; works with the Academic Deans, University Relations and the Graduate Council to advance and elevate graduate programs; assists with providing leadership for meeting enrollment goals of the strategic plan for graduate education; implements and administers policies and regulations affecting graduate students, including oversight of student requests, complaints and grievances; assist with efforts to facilitate a positive campus culture; assists the Office of Strategic Planning and Institutional Effectiveness with accreditation; and represents the Provost's office as requested.

Doctorate or other terminal degree; Associate or Full Professor rank; plus at least five years of experience in higher education leadership. Demonstrated knowledge and skills in graduate program planning and project management; evidence of extensive research and scholarly productivity and experience in writing and applying for externally and internally funded grants. Evidence of strategic thinking and implementation of successful collaborations and interdisciplinary work as well as the ability to handle sensitive situations and information with discretion. Outstanding communication skills –writing, speaking, and listening. Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion and affirmative action and equal opportunity procedures and principles also required.
Full professor rank; recent experience as Department/Unit Head, Graduate Program Director/Coordinator, or senior role in Research and Sponsored Programs. Strong leadership and administration skills are required. Experience in developing interdisciplinary graduate programs and directing interdisciplinary research is desired. Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills are essential. Familiarity with educational methods and technologies in traditional classroom settings as well as online delivery is preferred. An earned doctorate and academic qualifications sufficient to support appointment at the rank of Professor are required. At least 10 years of relevant experience, preferably at a senior management level is preferred.
