The Department of Curriculum and Teaching in the School of Education at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) invites applications for an Assistant Professor tenure-track position. We seek a candidate with demonstrated scholarship as an innovative literacy leader with visionary leadership to guide and lead the growth of our programs through excellence in the areas of teaching, service, and scholarship. Duties will include engaging in appropriate scholarly activities such as grants, presentations, research and publications in refereed journals, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, providing service to the university and the profession, and developing university/school partnerships to enhance programs.
The UAB School of Education's Graduate Reading Specialist Program ranks among the top ten in the nation of online education programs, serving early childhood, elementary, and secondary educators. Candidates accepted into the program gain the skill set to develop, implement, and evaluate a variety of instructional literacy approaches for meeting the needs of the varied stakeholders involved in a student's literacy development and overall achievement. We are seeking a leader with a strong understanding of the factors involved in literacy development along with knowledge of the critical nature of disciplinary and media literacies. The Reading Specialist will work with program candidates, UAB faculty, and local school faculty and administrators to develop strategic and innovative practices to support statewide literacy achievement. The Assistant Professor will also provide leadership and oversight for all aspects of the Graduate Reading Specialist program, including meeting accreditation requirements, and state accountability measures.

Earned Doctorate in Reading, Literacy, Curriculum and Instruction, or related field or anticipated earned Doctorate in Reading, Literacy, Curriculum and Instruction or related field by July 2020
Reading credentialing (30+ hours of graduate credit in the reading field)
Demonstrated potential for maintaining an active research and publication agenda
Three or more years of successful teaching experience in PreK-6 environment
Experience in advising students at both the undergraduate and graduate level
Demonstrated service at the department, school, university, state, national, and international levels
Knowledge of edTPA, National Boards, PRAXIS, and other credentialing and dispositional assessments
Experience in course development, program development, and continuous program improvement for meeting International, National, and State accrediting requirements
Experience supervising teacher candidates in the field
Experience teaching both face-to-face and online
Experience with grant writing and/or management
