The Frank Hawkins Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise is the outreach arm of UNC’s Kenan-Flagler Business School. Founded in 1985 by visionary entrepreneur and philanthropist Frank Hawkins Kenan, the Institute is the research, outreach, and strategic planning arm of Kenan-Flagler Business School. The Institute’s mission is to be a partner for innovative entrepreneurship with a vision of elevating the state of North Carolina to be a global leader in innovation and entrepreneurship.
The Managing Director is responsible for oversight and management of the day to day operations and programming of the Kenan Institute (KI) and affiliated centers and has the following core responsibilities and duties: 1) Develops the Kenan Institute’s overall strategic plan and vision, 2) Manages and oversees the implementation of the Institute’s strategic plan 3) Manage the internal and external stakeholder relationships critical to the success and reputation of the Institute 4) Ensure ongoing programmatic excellence, rigorous program evaluation, and consistent quality of finance and administration, fundraising, communications, and system. This position works very closely with the Faculty Director of the Institute, the Institute’s Board of Trustees, the President of the William R. Kenan, Jr. Fund, and the Dean and Sr. Associate Dean of the Business School. The Managing Director reports to the Faculty Director of the Kenan Institute and supervises the senior leadership of the Kenan Institute.
Education and Experience:
The successful candidate will be an individual with at least five years of demonstrated experience in an academic, private sector or policy sector background.. Experience leading multi-disciplinary teams and experience as a manager of people and process is preferred. Successful candidates will possess a style that is entrepreneurial, strategic, results-oriented, empathetic, and be skilled at cultivating and sustaining networks and key stakeholder relationships both inside and outside of the University. The ability to work effectively in an academic environment in which collaborative decision-making occurs is expected, as well as outstanding written and communication skills with both the business and scientific community. Experience with fundraising, including grant writing, is preferred. Budget management and financial management skills are also preferred.
-Excellent interpersonal, diplomatic, and communication skills necessary to develop successful working relationships with diverse external partners and members of the University community. -Ability to work across schools and departments at UNC -Experience interacting with federal and state government leadership (elected officials, senior staff, and appointed officials) -Knowledgeable about major non-profit organizations and foundations doing work or funding in the areas of entrepreneurship, economic development, and global business. -Experience with complex multi-unit budgeting processes -Experience planning and hosting high-profile events such as research conferences, symposiums and speakers. -Demonstrated ability to engage and interact with private sector business. -Experience implementing findings from applied academic research as well as engaging academic researchers in sponsored research initiatives.
