Assistant Professor of Art, Illustration and Foundations

The Department of Art at The College at Brockport, State University of New York, invites applications for a full time, 10-month, tenure track, Assistant Professor of Art in Illustration/Foundations. This faculty position will complement the curriculum in Studio Art and help to expand our course offerings, with the potential to develop a concentration in Illustration and teach classes that support multiple concentration areas including Graphic Design, contribute to the evolution of our program, and will be an integral member of a teaching environment that blends art and design.
The successful candidate will teach a 3/3 course load per calendar year - courses may be in Foundations (2-Dimensional Design, 3-Dimensional Design, and Drawing), and Illustration; collaboratively develop new courses in Illustration and other areas based on departmental needs and candidate's expertise; advise undergraduate students and participate in BFA program activities; pursue an active program of scholarship/creative activity; actively engage in service responsibilities throughout the Department, College, and the Profession.
A terminal degree (Master of Fine Arts or Master of Design) by time of appointment from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or an internationally recognized college or university; experience teaching at the college level (may include Teaching Assistant experience); ability to teach courses in Foundations and Illustration; strong professional portfolio that demonstrates mastery of skills in illustration/drawing and design; fluency in teaching visual design principles and processes to studio and graphic design students; demonstrated command of current technologies and software platforms; ability to combine digital and traditional approaches in instruction; excellent communication skills; ability to motivate a diverse student body.
Preferred Qualifications Experience with 3D Modeling, Motion Graphics, and/or Animation; proven record of combining traditional and computer design processes into course content; two years teaching at the college level; experience with course development and assessment; fluency in and appreciation for studio art and art history; professional experience in traditional and digital illustration mediums; comprehensive knowledge of current illustration trends, techniques, software, and theories; experience with client-centered practice; strong organizational and leadership skills.
The Department of Art consists of eight faculty: six studio artists, one graphic designer, and one art historian. We value a culture of collegiality and involvement at all levels: interpersonal, departmental and institutional. Student mentorship and student-centered teaching are strengths of our faculty. The department offers both a BA/BS and a BFA in Studio Art with concentrations in: Ceramics, Drawing, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, and Sculpture. We currently offer only a BA/BS concentration in Graphic Design, but plan to develop a BFA concentration in Graphic Design. The department also offers minors in Graphic Design, Studio Art, and Art History.
