Position Summary: The Manager of Risk Management works collaboratively with campus and community partners to reduce the university's vulnerability and sensitivity to adverse events through proactive risk reduction and loss prevention actions. This position provides leadership, expertise, and guidance to the University's executive leadership and campus community on a variety of topics related to environmental, insurance, emergency management and business continuity, student events and contractual agreements. The position is responsible for claim management, risk assessments, contract review and represents Business Affairs on campus-wide and community committees as needed. The position reports to the Chief Treasury Officer and is part of the finance team reporting into the Chief Financial Officer. The position has a dotted line to the General Counsel with regard to risk assessments, claim management, and litigation matters.
The position requires the ability to exercise initiative, independence and skill assembling, preparing and communicating information and documentation. The applicant must have the ability to exercise extreme tact and good judgment in responding to requests for information and/or interpretations of actions taken. The applicant must be adaptable to changes in the work environment, able to give and receive constructive feedback, effectively handle multiple tasks and competing demands, and work cooperatively in group situations and work actively to resolve conflicts.
Identify risks and determine how best to implement the optimal method of managing the risk, including assumption of risk, self-insurance and/or commercial insurance directly, or combination for exposures such as but not limited to property, liability, student athlete, student health, special events, study abroad and workers compensation
Manage of the University's commercial and self-insurance programs
Ensure that the university is protected against possible claims through appropriate insurance coverages and contractual risk transfer
Develop strategies and university policies to minimize risk and liability
Gather exposure data and complete insurance applications periodically
Assist in preparing and soliciting quotes from carriers and reviews new and renewal proposals
Review and manage the portfolio of insurance policies and maintain updated schedules of insurance
Work with insurance brokers to coordinate certificates of insurance
Manage all insurance claims, to include: property, liability, executive risk, etc.
Once litigation commences, assist General Counsel and outside counsel with discovery, investigations, etc.
Attend claims meetings where claim resolution strategies are discussed and serves as the liaison with commercial insurers as required to ensure reporting requirements are being met
Monitor workers compensation, medical malpractice and employment practices claims
Review University contracts to ensure proper insurance provisions
Collaborate with departments and units to consult on contractual insurance requirements
Provide template insurance terms to procurement centers
Negotiate insurance and indemnification terms as necessary
Provide risk management review of contracts to optimize risk transfer
Develop processes to ensure departments and units are properly evaluating, maintaining and updating insurance certificates
Obtain commercial insurance certificates as required to satisfy contractual obligations and ensure timely response
Review risks faced by University students and employees traveling abroad in the US
Develop and manage the annual operating budget for insurance programs
Track insurance invoices, submits them for payment and follows through to ensure timely payment
Assist in evaluating insurance allocation procedures
Provide general risk management advice and other projects
Help ensure compliance with local, state, and federal rules and regulations
Consult with units and departments on mitigating and managing their own risk
Build strong relationships and work collaboratively with campus stakeholders to identify unaddressed areas of risk
Serve on university committees to provide risk management consultation and perspective
Support accounting, treasury, legal and internal audit on projects as needed
Work closely with General Counsel in coordination of sensitive risk issues and litigation
Provide in-service education on risk management topics as needed or requested
Perform other related duties as assigned
Experience & Educational Background:
A bachelors degree in a relevant field is required and a masters degree is strongly preferred
A minimum of 8 years directly related and increasingly responsible management experience in the assigned area or one closely related.
A combination of education and experience sufficient to perform the duties of the position may be considered
Skills & Competencies:
Experience working with a variety of insurance products applicable to the University setting
Extensive knowledge about insurance contract language and risk transfer
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Excellent analytical, organizational, time management and problem solving skills
