Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering has two openings for post-doctoral positions in the lab of Profs. Matteo Pasquali and Glen Irvin. This first position (CNT Synthesis and Reaction Engineering) is focused on understanding and improving the concurrent production of hydrogen and CNTs via thermo-catalytic pyrolysis / chemical vapor deposition. We anticipate advances in reactor design, catalyst development and utilization, process engineering, and reaction engineering. Building relationships between designed/produced CNT materials and reaction engineering will be critical. The lab is facing multiple intertwined challenges as we develop emission-free sources of clean hydrogen, lightweight-ing and electrification of our transportation systems, while also decarbonizing the industrial sector, driven by metal and cement emissions. The high-efficiency, direct conversion of methane and other light hydrocarbons into useful carbon materials and hydrogen can give us a way to advance substantially all these goals. Carbon nanotube (CNT) fibers, films, and related macroscopic assemblies can already be made via the pyrolysis of hydrocarbons with concurrent hydrogen production and can be converted into macroscopic materials whose properties can displace CO2-intensive materials such as steel, aluminum, and construction materials. However, fundamental advances are needed at the level of catalysis, reactor engineering, and solution processing to attain the efficiencies needed to have positive hydrogen (energy) production on the large scale. This effort is funded by a recent ARPA-E grant and industrial collaborations (see here for further details: https://news.rice.edu/2019/01/28/turning-natural-gas-into-carbon-nanotubes-cuts-energy-use-carbon-dioxide-emissions/. The initial appointment will be for one year, with an expectation of renewal contingent on satisfactory progress and continued availability of funding. Anticipated starting date is January 1, 2020; different starting dates are possible depending on candidate's availability.
