Supporting Northwestern University Press, the Publicist is responsible for the creation of publicity activities that support the launch of NU Press frontlist and distribution titles and which enhance the awareness about and prestige of NU Press locally, nationally, and internationally.

Create and carry out publicity campaigns for up to 25 frontlist trade titles a year (and some scholarly titles) including:
Identify audiences and related media outlets
Compose media list and reviewers lists
Distribute ARCs and review copies
Write and distribute email announcement
Pitch interviews, op-eds, and feature stories
Develop author bookstore signings and other special events
Social media launch
Contribute written publicity points to the title’s general marketing plan
Identify and cultivate relationships with key media targets. Participate in seasonal media calls. Assiduously follow-up of media requests.
Communicate with authors about book-specific publicity activities.
Proactively develop partner relationships on campus (Media Relations, NUL, Block Museum, etc.) and in the area (Poetry Foundation, Chicago Humanities Festival, etc.) to develop opportunities to increase awareness about and the prestige of NU Press in the NU community.
Maintain and regularly update database of reviewers and media contacts.
Track and process tearsheets and media mentions.
Maintain the Press’s social media presence.
Develop new and enhance existing Wikipedia entries where possible.
Write press releases about topics related to the Press as necessary.
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)
Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree
1-2 Years’ experience in publicity, sales, or marketing, preferably at a university press, or the appropriate combination of education and experience
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Strong attention to detail and deadlines
Ability to work independently and with a team, handle and monitor progress of multiple deadline-driven projects simultaneously
Knowledge of MS Office Suite, Drupal, Excel, InDesign, Acrobat, and the Mac operating system
Ability to work across departments with agility and good humor

Computer Proficiency: Successfully uses multiple software programs independently. Software may include Microsoft Office, applications such as PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and Access, email, web browsers, and Peoplesoft.
