The Department of Laboratory Medicine serves as a regional resource for clinical laboratory services required for patient care, research and educational programs in laboratory medicine. The person in this role will perform and/or provide high level support at a professional level and performance of moderate to high complexity manual and automated clinical chemistry diagnostic tests used in the screening, diagnosing, and treating of pathological conditions. MLS 1 rotates and maintains competency in all sections where he/she has been trained. Follows safety/biohazards procedures and practices "Universal Precautions" at all times.RESPONSIBILITIES:Rotates through the Clinical Chemistry laboratory and maintains competency in all sections (Automation line, AU, DxI, Handtests, Command Central, Blood Gas including responding to codes, Centaur, General Bench, LCMS, Graphite Furnace, Atomic Absorption, and Satellite Lab) where they have been trained. The Medical Laboratory Scientist refers to the procedure/policy when questions ariseUnderstands and operates a variety of laboratory equipment requiring interpretative knowledge and is able to perform calibration, quality control, operations, basic maintenance and troubleshooting measures.Understands quality control(QC) and quality assurance (QA) requirements and follows policies to validate test resultsKnows the critical limits for all chemistry tests for which they are defined, reports them to appropriate medical staff, and documents the information according to laboratory policy.Assists with evaluation of new tests/equipment and incorporates checkout samples into the routine flow of work.Performs inventory in assigned area, unpacks, and labels supplies. Monitors and rotates stock as neededCalculates concentrations, prepares, verifies, and documents the making of reagents, controls, and standards. The technologist updates instruments with new lot parameters if appropriateInstructs new employees, medical laboratory science students, residents, and post-doctoral fellows in routine procedures and is patient and tolerant with themProvides bedside testing on a routine or emergency basis throughout the hospital as requiredPerform related duties as requiredREQUIREMENTS:This position will be offered as a Medical Laboratory Scientist 1 or Medical Laboratory Scientist Trainee dependent upon the qualifications of the selected candidate.Requirements for Medical Laboratory Scientist Trainee:Accredited Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory Science OR equivalent education/experience, AND Eligible to take the Medical Laboratory Science certification examination from the American Society for Clinical Pathology, with successful completion and certification within one year from date of hire. Failure of Medical Laboratory Science graduates to attain certification within one year of date of hire will result in a recommendation for termination.Requirements for Medical Laboratory Scientist 1:Accredited Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory Science OR equivalent education/experience, AND Current Medical Laboratory Science certification with the American Society for Clinical Pathology or equivalent certifying organization; or certification with specialty organization appropriate to the laboratory division, AND One year of experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist Trainee.
