The Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine (PACCM) at the University of Pittsburgh is seeking a Laboratory Specialist in a state-of-art internationally recognized pulmonary research program in the areas of pneumonia and lung injury.
Under the supervision of the senior scientist, the Laboratory Specialist will be primarily responsible for assisting in immunological assays. The candidate will be also responsible for performing other laboratory techniques such as immunocytochemistry, western blots, PCR, cell culture, rodent manipulation, and DNA/RNA extraction.
In addition, as needed, the incumbent will participate in various day-to-day activities in order to maintain the lab. These include making stock solutions, initiating and tracking purchase requests, organizing and tracking chemicals, supplies, and equipment. They will be processing clinical samples for further experimentation. The processing steps require attention to detail and good hands-on skills. The processed samples are subsequently analyzed using sophisticated technology and therefore reproducibility and perfection are essential. The incumbent will be responsible for entering these results into a database. The Laboratory Specialist will also manage mouse colonies, analyze transgenic and gene knockout mice and assist in studies with animal models of lung inflammation. The candidate must have a good knowledge of laboratory skills, a high level of self-sufficiency and must be able to work independently. Appropriate supervision is provided.
Degree in biologic or chemical science, preferred. Mouse breeding and general handling for experimentation a plus. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted.
