Essential Job Duties:
The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at North Carolina State University has 57 tenured/tenure-track faculty members, over 950 undergraduate students, 580 master's graduate students, and 260 doctoral graduate students. It is one of the top 5 suppliers of ECE talent at the BS level in the US, ranks #9 internationally among Electrical & Electronic Engineering Departments according to the Shanghai Global Rankings, and ranks in the top 10 ECE Departments in total annual research expenditures (ASEE). The department is located in state-of-the-art facilities on NC State University's Centennial Campus. NC State also serves as the headquarters for National Science Foundation's Engineering Research Center Advanced Self-Powered Systems of Integrated Sensors and Technologies (ASSIST). It is also home to state-of-the-art cleanroom and nano-characterization centers housed in in the Nanofabrication Facility (NNF) and Analytical Instrumentation Facility (AIF), respectively. The Laboratory for Electronics in Advanced Devices and Systems (LEADS), under the direction of Prof. Spyridon Pavlidis, is seeking a postdoctoral research scholar to work in the area sweat-based monitoring of stress. The candidate will be expected to:
- Develop and execute microfabrication processes for sensor microelectrodes - Develop and execute aptamer-based functionalization of gold surfaces - Characterize the performance of the fabricated sensors in artificial sweat
- Prepare manuscripts and technical reports, and present the work at international conferences - Participate in grant preparation - Assist with the training of undergraduate and graduate students.
Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate (e.g., M.D., D.V.M., Sc.D.) in appropriate field awarded no more than five (5) years from initial date of postdoctoral appointment.
Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate in appropriate field (Electrical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry) awarded no more than five (5) years from initial date of postdoctoral appointment.
The successful candidate should have a track record of publications in high-quality journals and/or conferences, as well as demonstrated experience performing semiconductor device design, fabrication and characterization expertise. The candidate must have the ability to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team.
The candidate will be expected to participate in the development of next generation wide bandgap semiconductor power devices. The following skills are therefore desirable:
- Knowledge of thiol chemistry for gold-based surface functionalization - Knowledge of aptamers and aptamer-based sensing - Electrical characterization of potentiometric sensors - Fabrication of microelectrodes
The candidate should also exhibit a history of creativity and willingness to explore new problems. A complementary background to the abovementioned skills (e.g., knowledge of high-frequency and/or nanomaterial-based devices) is welcome. The candidate should equally possess the ability to adapt to both applied projects with industrial partners as well as fundamental studies with academic collaborators.
