Research Associate for PARADIM Thin Film User Facility
PARADIM (Platform for the Accelerated Realization, Analysis, and Discovery of Interface Materials, http://paradim.cornell.edu) is a world-class NSF facility devoted to empowering practitioners to accelerate the discovery of atomically engineered inorganic materials that revolutionize electronics. PARADIM is seeking a research associate to work with an internationally recognized team of experts working together as a team to discover new interface materials relevant to the next generation of electronics. This team includes Profs. T. McQueen, J. Park, and D.G Schlom in materials synthesis; L.F. Kourkoutis, D.A. Muller, and K.M. Shen in materials characterization; and theorists C.J. Fennie and E.A. Kim. Successful candidates should have a Ph.D. in Physics, Applied Physics, Materials Science, Solid-State Chemistry or related fields with 4 or more years of relevant experience (exceptional MS candidates may also be considered) and will be responsible for the design, fabrication, and usage of a one-of-a-kind MBE system for synthesizing a wide range of interface material systems with in situ characterization by ARPES, LEED, XPS, and resistivity vs. temperature. Expertise in MBE, MOCVD, ARPES, or UHV-design is required. A key long-term responsibility of this position will be to mentor users of this system to create radically new materials with unprecedented properties. Additional responsibilities will include qualifying users on this ARPES+MBE+MOMBE system (including safety training), storing and curating data from the ARPES+MBE+MOMBE system including the growth conditions of all samples, teaching at PARADIM's summer school on thin film growth and in situ characterization, and interacting with users to help them refine their concepts prior to PARADIM proposal submission. PARADIM research associates are expected to be research active, i.e., the research associate should publish research papers related to the in-house research theme of PARADIM (interface quantum materials for next-generation electronics/sensors). To facilitate this, in addition to the possibility of collaborating with interested PARADIM users on their research, research associates may write proposals to use PARADIM facilities and spend up to 20% of their time doing research in PARADIM facilities related to interface quantum materials for next-generation electronics/sensors on which the research associate is the Principal Investigator.
Research Associate is a non-tenure track academic research appointment. This is a one-year term position that may be extended if the funding for PARADIM is renewed by its sponsor (NSF). Continued employment will be contingent on performance, program needs, and the availability of funding.
