This individual will be responsible for several aspects of data management to include: ETL, modeling and reporting on multiple business domains (Academic, Finance, Faculty, etc.). The Engineer / Analyst will be part of a newer team supporting existing data processes, integrating and migrating to modern technology. The position will advance our data culture by communicating effectively with business customers, learn and explain data opportunities, further develop, and enhance our data.This position will serve a key role, working with Dean of Medicine or School of Medicine units, vendors, UW Information Technology (UW IT), UW Medicine Information Technology (UW Med ITS), internal business and technical staff to create strategies, design and maintain data architecture: internal & external stores, master data management, data acquisition & integration, data delivery platforms, data propagation & distribution, data access & providers, analytic environments, predictive modeling environments, database management systems and metadata repository & services.The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting and enhancing these integrated systems and balance multiple competing priorities, clearly setting expectations while maintaining excellent customer relationships.This position will administer information systems and deliver data upon which School of Medicine (SoM) business processes are dependent. They will interact or deliver work to the UW community including staff, faculty, students, and residents so they can read, use and act on data to interpret results, gain insight, understand opportunities, increase efficiencies, improve quality and align with our mission to improve public health, advance medical knowledge and prepare tomorrows health professionals.RESPONSIBILITIESData Engineer:Develop and maintain databases, data models, ETL, reports, data visualization, and business intelligence solutions.Research, strategize, and write proposals to advance existing systems and manage new requirements.Provide best practices and guidance on all aspects of reporting to include: future plans, products, security, privacy compliance, technology, training, design, implementation, support, vendor and customer relationships, future dashboards, analytics, ad-hoc, mobile, cloud options, ETL tools, and research trends.Database Administration:Provide DBA support: auditing; application integration; backup and recovery; capacity planning; change management; database application development; data modeling and design; developing and maintaining best practices; high availability; installing, configuring, patching and upgrading SQL server software; load balancing; maintaining documentation; periodic database maintenance; managing dev and test environments; monitoring; performance tuning; data protection; replicating data; security; scripting; ETL; testing; training; troubleshooting; vendor relations; and working with teammates.General:Foster and maintain excellent relationships with a wide variety of internal, external business and technical partners.Attend unit-wide meetings; advance technical and professional skills through continuing education, mentoring programs or personal study; and research and maintain knowledge of new technologies for departmental use.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTSBachelor's degree in computer science, information management or related field or equivalent experience. Five years' of business intelligence analytics experience to include deploying dashboards, paginated reports, and preparing visuals/analysis.5 years SQL development experience using Transact SQL.Knowledge of relational and multi-dimensional reporting database schema designs.Experience in data modeling, Tabular, MDX, DAX or SQL row and column level security.Experience with an ETL technology (ex. SSIS).Experience working with reporting technologies such as Crystal, Business Objects, Tableau, Power BI, or Reporting Services.Experience with data cleansing and/or ensuring data integrity.Some experience with Java, C#, Python, R script or M query.Strong problem solving skills, investigating and resolving issues.Demonstrated ability to work with minimum supervision as an individual contributor to projects and daily work.Strong sense of focus and attention to detail, flexibility, self-motivation, organizational skills, excellent written/oral communication skills, and ability to adapt to a range of technical and non-technical audiences.DESIRED REQUIREMENTSTwo or more years of experience working in higher education, research, or health services organizations.Experience working in virtual servers, containers, or cloud computing (such as Azure, AWS, or serverless computing) environments.An understanding of contemporary IT systems, network infrastructure and their interdependencies.Experience working with HIPAA, FERPA and GDPR data.CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENTOccasional evening and weekend work to meet deadlines.Periodic daytime travel (often possible via UW transportation means) to/from various UW and client location.Application Process:The application process for UW positions may include completion of a variety of online assessments to obtain additional information that will be used in the evaluation process.
