The Division of Data Science and Information is a newly formed Division at the organizational level of our Colleges and Schools. The Division's dynamic structure connects computing, statistics, the humanities, and social and natural sciences to create a vibrant and collaborative environment to accelerate breakthrough research across scientific and technological frontiers. The Division includes Data Science Education, the School of Information, the departments of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences and Statistics, the Berkeley Institute for Data Science, and the Data Science Commons. The Division offers programs of interdisciplinary research and teaching at significant scale, and it is continually developing new pathways and programs to advance its mission on campus and beyond. The Division is responsible for growing Berkeley's broad-based data science education program, including classes and programs serving thousands of undergraduate students a year. It includes a BA degree in Letters & Science and a new minor. It is responsible for supporting the campus-wide data science education program, including a foundational introductory course, Data 8, which serves over 3,000 students annually and is rapidly growing, together with dozens of connector courses, advanced courses serving thousands of students, and a portfolio of co-curricular programs.
Working closely with colleagues working with the student programs team, this position will be responsible for the recruitment and matching of student team members as well as providing support, mentorship, leadership development, and community building for the student teams.
30% Recruitment and Matching:
Assists with development, operations, and adapting application system for student programs and teams. Prepares application forms, supports development of assessment criteria, organizes and collaborates in application review. Cross trains teams to review the applications (applications are in the multiple hundreds) and works with business services manager to oversee the hiring process.Collaborates in developing matching criteria, oversees matching process. Prepares onboarding paperwork, ensures all participants are onboarded. Maintains databases.
25% Student Engagement:
Mentors staff and student leads in steering their teams in a consistent manner ensuring that they meet the goals established for their projects. Assists with the development and implementation of programs for ensuring positive, growth-oriented student team culture. Oversees pathways for students to develop responsibility, leadership, and skills. Ensures students on the teams have access to mentorship and guidance outside of their immediate teams. Works to build community among and across the student teams so they have visibility into the different projects and opportunities available within the division. Distributes and collects surveys to understand the student team climate and experience. Works with divisional colleagues to address problem areas and concerns as they arise.
20% Student Leadership Development:
Orients, evaluates, and supervises qualified student team leaders. Acts as point of contact for project leaders. Provides training and mentoring to student project leaders. Develops schedules for student check-in times and locations with students.
10% Planning and Development:
Actively participates in planning for the Data Science programs that connect large numbers of undergraduate students with hands on, team based opportunities to contribute to various data related projects. Assists with generating options for planning, recruiting, and managing growth of student programs in the Division, including student teams, Data Scholars, and student training opportunities. Plans and develops new programs and curriculum, and adjusts existing courses and curriculum in a continuing education environment. Participates in executing market plans and target audiences for the DS programs.
10% Analysis and Evaluation:
Implements and utilizes evaluation tools for student research and project management. Supports the analysis of programs and systems through student and participant evaluations. Monitors and analyzes participant trends of interest. Tracks student and project performance and program desirability.
5% Presentations and Events:
Leads orientation presentations, student events and showcases, and other community events in support of the programs. Works in collaboration with other team members to create information and social events to generate student interest, develop and inclusive culture, and improve student retention.
Solid communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff, both verbally and in writing.
Solid ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.
Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality.
Ability to use sound judgment in responding to issues and concerns.
Working skills to analyze information and synthesize large amounts of data with strong attention to detail.
Working knowledge of common campus-specific and other computer application programs.

The hourly salary range designated for this position: $24.14 - $35.00; however, starting salary will be commensurate with experience.
