The Department of Population & Public Health Sciences within the Boonshoft School of Medicine at Wright State University is seeking applicants for an Assistant or Associate Professor in Biostatistics. The successful candidate will conduct research and teach courses in the Master of Public Health program and assist with research in one or more clinical departments within the Boonshoft School of Medicine.
Specifically, the candidate will collaborate with faculty and students within the Department of Population and Public Health Sciences in conducting research, including submission of grant applications and scholarly activity resulting in refereed journal publications. Successful candidate will assist with research question formulation and take lead in all statistical aspects of research design. Candidate will plan and carry out all aspects of statistical analysis. In addition, candidate will have the opportunity to pursue their own independent program of research.
Successful candidate will teach courses in the Master of Public Health Program. Candidate will teach current biostatistics and/or epidemiology courses and will have the opportunity to develop new courses (e.g., applied statistics) that meets the needs of the students.
Population and Public Health Science faculty conduct research on a wide range of topics, including work in behavioral health, substance use, maternal child health outcomes, disabilities, and environmental health.
The graduate public health program offers a unique academic learning environment. The program is housed within a community-based medical school that values partnerships and collaborative programming with public health stakeholders. In addition to the MPH degree, students can earn a graduate certificate in epidemiology, emergency preparedness, global health, public health leadership, and our newest certificate – aerospace medicine.
PhD in Biostatistics, Statistics, Epidemiology, or a related field – All requirements completed by time of appointment.
Breadth and depth of knowledge of statistical methodology and applied statistics for common types of public health and clinical research. This includes knowledge and experience with different types of study designs. For example, clinical trials, observational studies, and complex surveys. In addition, experience with sample size estimation and questionnaire development.
Evidence of productivity resulting from previous collaborative research: must have one of the following: peer-reviewed publications, participation in writing grant applications, abstracts, posters, presentations, reports, or other products
Expertise in SPSS, SAS, and/or R
To qualify for Assistant Professor, the candidate must meet the minimum qualifications listed above.
To qualify for Associate Professor, the candidate must meet the minimum qualifications and in addition, the candidate must have a record of sustained and high-quality teaching and scholarship. Scholarship performance includes a minimum of five articles in peer-reviewed journals, or equivalent peer-reviewed repository, while at the rank of assistant professor. For publications on which the candidate is not the first author or senior author, the publications must represent reports of work in which the faculty member is the primary author or played a major role in the research. Five years of experience in biostatistics or epidemiology, in particular, quantitative and scientific problems arising in public health.
Record of past/current extramural funding.
Experience writing extramural grant proposals.
Excellent oral and written communication skills, in particular in the communication of statistical concepts and results to non-statisticians.
Preference given to candidates with experience in teaching biostatistics or other related topics
Expertise in additional statistical computing software (e.g., SPSS, Stata), and in working with relational databases (e.g., Teradata, Oracle, DB2, SQL, Microsoft Access).
Experience in consulting
Experience in mixed methods research (integration of qualitative & quantitative methods).
Collaborative peer-reviewed publications and statistical methodology publications in refereed journals.
Experience extracting, managing, and analyzing data from medical record systems.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a research team.
Excellent analytical, interpersonal, time management, and organizational skills, including thorough and consistent documentation of work to ensure reproducibility.
Essential Functions and percent of time::
Teach graduate courses and mentor students. 30%
Conduct independent and collaborative research and submit grant proposals with other faculty. 40%
Provide biostatistical support to one or more clinical departments within the Boonshoft School of Medicine – 20%
Participate in university, community, and professional service – 10%.
Position is a 12-month non-tenured appointment with an initial contract of three years, renewable annually. Special contract terms and conditions of employment apply.
All courses are held at Research Park or offered through the university course management system. Graduate courses meet in the evening one night a week.
