Clinical Nurse Lead will be responsible for primary oversight and administrative management of the RN's and MA's on provider clinical teams in addition to standard clinical duties at the Department of Orthopedic Surgery. S/he will provide guidance and coordinate training for team members to ensure compassionate, effective and efficient delivery of high quality clinical care for patients. Clinical Nurse Lead will set standards, spearheading transformation, inspiring and influencing team by modeling appropriate professional behaviors and provide mentoring. Will also serve as a link between RN's and MA's and Department Leadership.
General Patient Care Responsibilities to include, but not limited to the following:
Demonstrate excellent customer service through attitude and actions, consistent with the standards contained in the mission, vision and values of Columbia Orthopedics.
Acts as a liaison between patients and your provider, other providers, physical therapists, etc.
Assists provider daily in practice setting, i.e. reviews patient charts prior to office hours and enters x-ray orders, manages patient flow, preps for examinations and minor in-office procedures.
Remove sutures, stitches and staples.
Remove and/or apply dressings, casts, slings, splints and braces.
Assists provider in maintaining accurate EHR, i.e. review/update active problems, reconcile medications, ensure pharmacy and vitals have been entered, etc.
Completes test requisitions as needed and instructs patients/guardians on the requisitions.
Educates patient in regards to post visit follow up, pre and postoperative care management.
Coordinates appointments with provider or other providers as needed.
Triage patient telephone calls, provide medical guidance, education or referrals, etc.
Manage and expedite patient requests, i.e. medication refill, therapy prescription, etc.
Complete patient forms i.e. disability, excuse notes, letter of medical necessity, etc.
Maintains/Updates provider office protocols, education materials, supplies, etc.
Maintains knowledge of provider schedule with regards to patient hours, travel and administrative duties, etc.
Assists with data collection in regard to research i.e. publications, presentations, etc.
Act as liaison between provider and Fellows, Residents, Academic Coordinator, etc.
Rounds with provider or independently on post-op patients, performs discharge teaching, etc.
Supervisory Responsibilities to include, but not limited to the following:
Supports department strategic plans that achieve high impact and significant improvements in organizational performance.
Demonstrates problem solving, leadership, conflict management and team building skills.
Assists Director of Clinical Services with screening and interviewing of new applicants as needed.
Assists with completion clinical systems request forms to ensure new team members have all the necessary access to computer programs, email and security systems as needed.
Assists with on-boarding, ensures all new team members are oriented to the Team, Department, Hospital and University.
Ensures new hires to team are properly trained on provider specific protocols, chart prep, order entry in HER, medication reconciliation, suture removal, etc.
Assists Director of Clinical Services with ensuring team members completes all mandatory departmental training and maintains up to date certifications.
Continuously act as a source of information, training and coaching to clinical team; fosters continuous learning for team.
Tracks vacations and sick days for team.
Submits payroll edits bi-weekly for team.
Coordinates clinical coverage and chart prep completion for provider(s) office hours during employee absences; offers cross-coverage during employee absences as needed.
Monitor performance of team members in support of Columbia Orthopedics goals and objectives.
Assists Director of Clinical Services with performance appraisals:
Gathers feedback and drafts performance appraisals; to be reviewed by Director of Clinical Services.
Documents activities leading to counseling sessions and verbal disciplinary actions; to be reviewed by Director of Clinical Services.
Holds quarterly team meetings/huddles to effectively communicate departmental goals and desired outcomes, workflow changes, etc.
Attends all regular departmental meetings.
Continuing Education and Certifications:
Participates in professional development activities and maintains professional affiliations.
Maintains CPR and OSHA certifications as needed.
Requires bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and experience, plus four years of related experience
NY State RN License; current licensure maintained
Five or more years of experience working in an outpatient Orthopedic practice
Neat, professional appearance, pleasant speaking voice and demeanor.
Excellent customer service skills, ability to work with patients and make them feel comfortable.
Strong written and verbal communication skills with physicians, patients and support staff
Comfortable using email and interacting with Internet applications; Electronic Health Record preferred.
Ability to assess skills, evaluate performance and provide feedback.
Ability to work to satisfy others expectations and teach staff to do the same.
Ability to communicate ideas and responsibly challenge existing procedures and policies.
Ability to generate new ideas; make decisions based on specific goals and constraints, generate alternatives, consider risks and evaluate and choose best alternative, recognizes problems and devise and implement plan of action; use efficient learning techniques to acquire and apply new knowledge and skills.
