About Northeastern: Founded in 1898, Northeastern is a global research university and a world leader in experiential learning. The same commitment to connecting with the world drives our use-inspired research enterprise. The university offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate and graduate programs leading to degrees through the doctorate in nine colleges and schools. Our campuses in Charlotte, N.C., San Francisco, Seattle, and Toronto are regional platforms for undergraduate and graduate learning and collaborative research. Northeastern pursues advanced research in security and materials at the Innovation Campus in Burlington, Massachusetts, and in coastal sustainability at the Marine Science Center in Nahant, Massachusetts.
About the Opportunity: The College of Engineering Communication Lab (CommLab) is a discipline-specific peer-coaching academic program that identifies, trains and utilizes a network of peer coaches to help students gain key transferrable communication skills. The CommLab serves primarily COE graduate students and post-docs in participating COE departments. The CommLab also offers an opportunity for the CommLab Fellows, participating COE department PhD students, to enhance their own communication skills by learning through teaching, running workshops, and partnerships with faculty. The program operates in a matrix fashion, wherein each participating department hires CommLab Fellows who report administratively to the department but report functionally to the CommLab Program Coordinator. This allows the program to maintain a central core of excellence and yet to tailor and deliver the material according to the culture and goals of the individual engineering departments, utilizing the expertise of trained engineering students within the individual departments.
Responsibilities: Under the overall guidance of the Associate Dean for Graduate Education, the Program Coordinator directs and manages the overall program, has full responsibility for planning, managing, executing, and expanding the following program activities using own judgment:
Overseeing the cross-departmental CommLab program to help engineering students learn to write, speak and design visuals effectively. This is done on demand by providing coaching support from experienced peers in the context of existing papers, presentations, job interviews, etc. with which the students are engaged.
Collaborating with the Associate Dean for Graduate Education on the overall vision and strategy for the program while ensuring its sustainability and future growth.
Connecting deeply with all program stakeholders including Department Heads, and Graduate Committees, and a breadth of institutional collaborators at NU and across the larger scientific community to engage in each department at the appropriate level of contribution, as requested.
Working with participating departments to recruit CommLab Fellows.
Planning and leading training sessions for CommLab Fellows.
Planning, designing, managing and helping to lead seminars and trainings to complement the coaching activities.
One-on-one counseling and support for individual Fellows as required.
Working with other staff members and the Associate Dean for Graduate Education to ensure the success of the Program.
Collaborating with the NU writing center on synergistic and intersecting program activities.
