Under close supervision, Licensed Vocational Nurse will contribute to multiple research projects including but not limited studies on people with HIV and neurological disorders, studies evaluating pharmaceutical and cannabis treatments, cognitive functioning, effects of illicit drug use and effects of HIV on the brain and peripheral nervous system. Supervised incumbent will assist in five main areas: Clinical Assessment, Clinical Procedures, Quality Assurance, Research Support, and Maintenance of Equipment and Supplies.
Clinical Assessment duties include performing participant interviews in-person and by phone for the purpose of data collection, following-up with clinicians and other neuromedical staff to complete case report forms, preparing data for entry. Clinical Procedures duties include administering study drug based on protocol and State/Federal guidelines, assessing for side effects of drug, inserting indwelling IV catheters, drawing blood by fingerstick, standard venipunture and/or withdrawal through indwelling catheter, obtaining vital signs, performing point-of-care testing, processing and inventorying specimens, working with the processing laboratories, documenting all services in the participant case report forms or logs.
Quality Assurance duties include thoroughly reviewing case report forms to identify discrepancies and missing information, downloading and reviewing electronic data (as scheduled) to identify discrepancies and missing information, taking the appropriate steps to correct discrepancies and filling-in missing information, maintaining records of QA activities and providing periodic reports of the volume and types of errors and resolutions.
Research Support and admin duties include attending study meetings, assisting in the preparation of progress reports/grant submissions/manuscripts, assisting with data analysis, and assisting with study coordination. Maintenance of Equipment and Supplies duties include maintaining sterilization or disinfection of instruments, maintaining equipment in good working order, including maintenance checks as required, ordering/stocking/re-stocking of supplies.
Must possess current license issued by State of California Board of Vocational Nurse Examiners and current CPR Certification.
Proficiency and certificate for phlebotomy and IVs. Phlebotomy experience required for clients of adult age.
Proven knowledge of nursing procedures for administering study drug, observing and recording reactions; performing outlined procedures, including phlebotomy.
Strong experience with taking/recording vital signs and dispensing medications.
Demonstrated experience with interviewing in a research or clinical setting.
Proven ability to obtain and respond to complex health information obtained in person or over the phone.
Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology and basic medical equipment.
Experience using MS Office Suite, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and analytical programs, e.g JMP. Ability to effectively use spreadsheets, databases, word processing programs, and email, and navigate the internet.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work effectively with a diverse study population and staff.
Cultural competency working with diverse populations including ethnic and cultural minorities, gays and lesbians, people living with HIV, and people recovering from substance abuse.
Strong organizational skills with ability to prioritize work, meet deadlines, maintain accurate records, and show consistent attention to detail.
Ability to read, write and speak fluent Spanish.
Demonstrated experience with quality assurance.
Experience with research support duties (e.g., assistance with literature reviews, preparing abstracts/manuscripts, progress reports, etc).
