In service of Cornell students, faculty, staff, alumni and visitors, the Cornell Retail Services team engineers and executes the operational success of a multi-channel retail business, including a 22,000 sq. ft. flagship campus store, 3 expansive e-commerce sites, and 8 satellite locations throughout the Ithaca area and NYC, ultimately producing a cumulative $26 million in annual retail sales.
The Cornell Store, located at Weill Cornell Medicine, is located in the heart of the Upper East Side of Manhattan's "scientific corridor". The store serves as a retail shopping and special-order sales outlet for students, faculty, staff members, and a network of clients associated with New York Presbyterian Hospital, Hospital for Special Surgery and Memorial Sloan Kettering. We offer Weill Cornell Medicine, Cornell University, Cornell Tech and New York Presbyterian branded apparel and giftware as well as some medical college supplies. Our apparel styles range from classic collegiate to seasonal and fashion items. Additionally, our giftware items include drinkware, coasters, desk accessories, and plush.
The Retail Sales Lead will provide key front line support and high-quality customer service to our patrons to ensure a welcoming as well as engaging shopping experience in our stores. While operating as a key point person for their assigned store, the sales lead will regularly demonstrate "active selling", solve routine (and sometimes complex) problems and assist in in a number of critical retail areas such as point of sale support, visual merchandising, and inventory support. The sales lead will also help to care for a number of operational tasks including maintaining, understanding and monitoring store policies and procedures as well as helping execute and coordinate staff coverage, team training and development and other key departmental/unit objectives.
Success in this role includes the ability to operate in a fast-paced environment both independently and as a team player as well as being able to multi-task effectively through multiple priorities while continuing to remain customer service focused. Additionally, it's important to be able to handle any conflict or concerns with diplomacy and tact as you work with, and support, a variety of customers, visitors, clients and staff. In this role, it's important to be flexible as the schedule may change based on business needs and may include some evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Please note: Current appointment is a one-year term position. Options to renew thereafter would be based on business needs, available funding and successful performance. There is no visa sponsorship available for this position.
Formal training beyond a high school diploma of one to two years, two years of college coursework, or Associates degree and at least one year of retail experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience required
Strong customer service skills and moderate computer/systems competency.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Ability to occasionally climb ladders and lift and/or move 25-50 pounds as needed.
Additional work experience in business management, hospitality, fashion/design, and or other related fields.
College coursework, Associates degree or other formal training.
Prior retail sales experience or cash-handling experience strongly preferred.
