This is a part time position anticipated to work 17.5 hours per week.
The Neurology service of the Small Animal Section utilizes state-of-the art diagnostic tests and cutting edge surgical procedures to provide high quality care to their patients and assistance to their clients in a facility and environment that emphasizes quality of life for animals and support for owners in the form of education, information services and grief counseling; to provide a facility and environment that supports teaching of Neurology to veterinary students, interns and residents in training, as well as continuing education for veterinary practitioners, veterinary technicians and the general public; to provide a facility and environment conducive to the study of neurologic disease, diagnosis, prognosis and treatments in companion animals; to support and promote general awareness about neurologic disease in companion animals in the scientific community and in the general public.
This position will assist the neurologists, residents, interns, staff, and students in carrying out the treatment of clinical cases (outpatient & inpatient) and surgical cases (prepping, setting up, assisting & post-op medical management), perform anesthesia on neurology patients for special procedures, and perform special procedures. Candidates for this position will be trained to perform electrodiagnostics tests (brain auditory evoked response tests (BAER) and EEGs) and present the clinician with results. The position will see primary technician appointments, assist with the physical examination process, record a complete and accurate patient history, and instruct veterinary students on neurology topics. Be the main point of contact for the service with other hospital services and university departments. In addition, this technician will become familiar with the laboratory work, record keeping, documentation, and stocking/cleanliness of all section rooms. Cross training in other areas of the hospital is expected.
Associates Degree or High School Diploma or equivalent with at least one year of experience required. CVT or licensure eligible. Basic computer skills; strong math skills. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. with or without accommodation.
5 or more years' experience in a busy, fast paced veterinary hospital. Current CVT license preferred. Should possess the ability to handle a high caseload and stressful situations in a professional manner. Following direction and prioritizing the workload is a necessity. Should have an excellent understanding of medical terminology and familiarity with veterinary pharmacology. Prior experience with an emphasis in Anesthesia preferred. Technical abilities should include: patient restraint, good venipuncture skills, good working knowledge and skill in anesthesia, knowledge of medicating, monitoring and treating a variety of patients. Excellent interpersonal skills in relating to co-workers, clinicians, students, staff and clients. Prior leadership role is desirable. Able to work well independently as well as part of a team. Highly motivated, enthusiastic self-starter with a professional attitude. Ability to work in a busy, stressful environment with diverse personalities while maintaining a calm, professional demeanor. Flexibility with work schedule is a must.
Special Work Schedule Requirements:
* The schedule for this position may include providing University and calendar holiday coverage on a rotating basis. * Schedule may include evenings and weekends. * The schedule for this position requires flexibility to ensure that adequate patient care is provided without interruption or exception. * This position is considered essential and is therefore required to report to work as scheduled during emergency closings.
