Job Summary The Lab Assistant will provide administrative support and operations management at the Protein Expression Center, specifically managing our online Scientific Core Facility Management Software, billing (internal and external Caltech clients), maintaining and managing lab instrument use and maintenance, and general lab tests.
- Provide support for basic office tasks, including processing purchasing requests, answering phones, handling outbound shipments, and maintaining office records. - Assist with tracking and submitting internal/external Center billing on a timely basis. - Set up and track the processing of Caltech Technical Service Agreements (TSAs) with external clients. - Assist with resolving billing and revenue reconciliation issues, budget reports, and other reports. - Assure and audit for format compliance of data entry into scientific databases. - Complete and maintain Director scheduling and assist with Director's email and voicemail communication. - Organize group lunches and meeting schedules and meeting room reservations. - Stockroom organization (restocking and inventory control) and maintenance of lab buffer and chemical stock supplies; order supplies and reagents for the lab. - Manage lab instrument and equipment maintenance and extract instrument use times from instrument logs. - Help with basic lab tasks such as buffer preparation and training and supervision of lab assistants performing lab tasks. - Manage lab safety compliance and training. - Other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications - Strong communication skills (both oral and written) and organizational skills. - Strong problem solving and customer service skills. - Effective computer skills including familiarity with Excel. - Strong willingness to learn new skills when needed. - Proactive and motivated personality.
Preferred Qualifications - BA or MA in life sciences/biochemistry or related fields. - Basic biology/biochemistry lab skills including experience in preparing reagents for instrument maintenance, instrument testing, etc. and general lab reagents. - Strong computer literacy including some basic programming skills, preferably VBA/VB.NET and MS Excel programming skills. - Basic website maintenance skills. - Good interdisciplinary scientific understanding skills. - Fast reading and typing skills.
