Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Financial Counselor I for the Practice Management Services at the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey.
The Financial Counselor position supports the billing and collection process for the clinic, infusion and business operations at Cancer Institute of New Jersey to ensure maximum reimbursement.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Obtains financial and demographic data prospectively on new patients and established patients. This function is done in coordination with the front desk. Enters all new data into IDX/Optimum
Assists patients that are uninsured or underinsured in obtaining public benefits, charity care, or other financial sponsorship.
Maintains a file of community, state and federal resources that are available and criteria to assist patients with financial need.
Coordinates financial hardship cases with RWJMG and the hospital's finance office.
Coordinates with the physician or nurse as needed to obtain clinical information. Retrieves information from patient medical record to complete requests.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Three (3) years' experience in a physician's office, hospital, or clinic or with a health insurance company working with patient benefits and financial information and/or customer service.
General medical terminology or knowledge of oncology medical terminology required. Knowledge of CPT and ICD-10 coding and Medicare, Medicaid, and other medical insurance coverage is required.
Highly effective oral and written communication skills are required to communicate with clinical, administrative and other personnel.
Superior interpersonal skills are important in maintaining a sound public image in dealing with patients, families, physicians and insurance companies. Excellent critical thinking and attention to detail.
Must be computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of databases and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word and Excel, Access and PowerPoint.
Must demonstrate an understanding of the principles of guest relations and be able to maintain a professional demeanor and customer service orientation under busy and stressful situations.
Prior experience with computerized billing systems preferred.
