GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Under general supervision of the Manager of Electronic Services or designee, performs skilled work at the journeyman level of electronic access control systems for all campus buildings and other assigned areas. Installs, maintains, programs, and troubleshoots electronic card access systems and/or operating errors. Maintains access and alarm system interfaces as well as other custom applications.
EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Installs, programs and maintains electronic card access systems, door alarms, system interfaces, handicap entrances and parking gates; recommends system upgrades and responds to technical and/or upgrade inquiries.
Determines what parts are required, including electronic interfaces; locates the part, including making parts if necessary.
Creates and/or installs new parts as required, including electronic interfaces.
Conducts on-site training sessions for other U.D. mechanics and vendor staff.
Programs operating system commands in system software, troubleshoots software operating errors.
Assists in data communications design, installation and repairs; installs network communication devices including encryption.
Maintains access card record embedded in software, Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems dedicated to access control, and time and material records.
Prepares work reports in accordance with departmental standards.
Conducts related maintenance inspections and preventative maintenance on systems such as UPS, electric strikes, and Lantronix Cobox.
Uses computer to access e-mail, receive work instructions and other administrative information to include electronic payroll forms.
Communicates daily using a two-way radio, cell phone and/or pager system in order to respond to work-related routine and emergency information.
Ensures shop equipment and diagnostic tools are in proper working condition including the access system host computer.
Performs housekeeping duties to maintain a clean, uncluttered and safe work environment.
Performs all other related duties as assigned.
With or without assistance, must be able to exert 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects and job-related materials and/or equipment.
Ability to accurately discern colors.
Ability to climb stairs, use ladders and aerial lifts, work from scaffolding and high areas using appropriate harness and tether equipment, and use ramps and aerial lift devices above ground.
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS/OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURES:
The primary physical environment requires the employee to work both inside and outside in both extreme heat and cold conditions, as well as conditions that are wet/humid, dry and during times when temperatures are below 32°F for more than one-hour periods.
Employee must lift, tug, pull, and transport, with or without assistance, both small and heavy equipment and material, as necessary.
The employee may be required to bend, squat, stretch and stand and/or work in cramped areas for prolonged periods of times while repairing equipment both at floor level, overhead, and/or in confined space areas.
Environment may frequently include dust and/or airborne particles and occasionally loud noise, electricity/high voltage, chemicals, gases, fumes, and vibration.
Employee is required to wear designated personal protective equipment to include, but not limited to, ANSI-approved safety eyewear, hardhats, gloves, hearing protection, full face shield, aprons and footwear to prevent exposures to hazardous materials, noise, dust and/or airborne particles.
Must be able to wear designated respirator when required as part of the personal protective equipment.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Must possess thorough knowledge, skills, and ability necessary for the installation, troubleshooting, repair and prevention of applied maintenance in all types of electronic controls and interfaces during routine and emergency situations.
Demonstrated ability to handle repairs and large scale maintenance requirements utilizing group work; skilled in using tools and electronic diagnostic equipment. Knowledge of lock and alarm systems (electronic and semi-electronic or electrical access).
Knowledge of current technological developments/trends.
Knowledge and familiarity with the computer operation and structure of University standard word processing, database, electronic mail, with additional capability to work in SQL preferred, computer programming and operation; data communication equipment and protocol; and associated hardware and software.
Some experience in circuit board manufacture.
Must be familiar with Westinghouse Security Electronics (WSE) and Nexwatch system operations used at the University; ability to work from electrical schematics and drawings.
Must have working knowledge of standard practices, tools, materials and terminology concerning the use of testing equipment; knowledge of hazards and safety precautions; and mechanical ability.
Ability to use hand and power tools.
Ability to perform preventive maintenance according to vendor and/or University published guidelines.
Must be able to use oscilloscope, simpson meter, and other electronic test equipment (including both commercial and in-house designed and manufactured).
Ability to troubleshoot and repair controls and systems alarms, and other electronic control systems.
Ability to perform complex tasks and to prioritize multiple projects; work from complex diagrams and drawings related to various controls and alarm systems, and other electronic control systems.
Ability to understand and follow safety procedures.
Ability to comprehend and follow verbal and written instructions.
Strong analytical problem solving and communications skills are essential.
Must be able to work both independently and cooperatively with all levels of staff.
Proven ability to make independent decisions and demonstrate integrity, discretion, and good judgment.
Ability to interact professionally, communicate effectively and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds throughout the University community and must be customer service oriented.
Ability to provide technical leadership with outside vendors and other University personnel.
Thorough knowledge of U/D campus layout; leadership ability to plan, schedule and monitor work.
Must be capable of working independently and prioritizing tasks in order to meet the needs of the unit and its customers.
REQUIRED MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Requires high school diploma, GED or equivalent with 4 years experience as an access control technician.
Requires two years’ experience and/or training in the electronics field.
Completion of advanced related courses of study within the trade.
Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot access control systems faults.
Locksmith/door hardware experience is desirable.
Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license in order to drive University of Delaware vehicles to get to and from job sites.
