The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), Institute of Human Virology (IHV) is currently recruiting for a Laboratory Research Specialist . The Laboratory Research Specialist is required to conduct basic experiments in molecular and cellular biology to accomplish the objectives of an awarded NIH grant.

Perform independent project(s) and participate in the design of research studies. Compile, analyze, and interpret research data using various relevant computer software applications.
Isolate human and murine peripheral blood cells and maintain them in culture.
Independently perform day to day laboratory research activities such as: flow cytometry, glycoprotein isolation and gel electrophoresis/immunoblotting and nucleic acid isolation and PCR analysis.
Perform cell migration assays and DNA transfections.
Maintain populations of knock-out mice and work with a murine model of pneumonia.
Conduct general laboratory housekeeping to include ordering supplies, ensuring quality control and safety compliance, developing laboratory policies and procedures and maintaining equipment.
Conduct library research and participate in preparing manuscripts for publication.
Assist in the training of junior technical laboratory personnel in the performance of a variety of laboratory techniques.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Education: Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or field of study related to the research of the laboratory.
Experience: Three (3) years of experience including two (2) years in the relevant research specialization.
Other: May consider a combination of directly related experience and education.
May require training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials and/or ionizing radiation.
