The Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise is seeking a research data specialist to serve as a data consultant for faculty and students working on research projects at the Institute, an affiliated center, or Kenan-Flagler Business School. This position will serve as the point person for research projects that require extensive data support including data acquisition, collection, cleaning, and analysis. The research data specialist will maintain in-house research databases and audit data on a regular basis to ensure data integrity and quality. Additionally, this position will serve as the project manager for Institute data initiatives, and will be responsible for managing project timelines, training student research assistants and project staff, and ensuring quality of efforts. This position will be expected to keep up on the latest tools and techniques for data analysis and management. This position will be a member of the Kenan Institute’s Research Services team and will report to the Director of Research Services. Research Services is the primary research support team for the Institute and its affiliated centers. Along with other research staff this position will engage with multiple faculty, doctoral students, and staff members at a time, each having his/her own research interests, methodological specialties, and technical backgrounds.
Education and Experience:
1 – 4 years of experience using data analysis tools and techniques in a relevant setting. Demonstrated proficiency with statistical packages (Stata, SAS, R, Python, etc.) and Excel required. Experience with data visualization tools required with a preference for experience with Tableau. Proficiency in database management (at least intermediate knowledge of SQL) and familiarity with database design. Must be detail oriented and have the ability to manage time efficiently. Must be familiar with government data sources (census, BLS, BEA) and commonly used business datasets and platforms such as WRDS (CRSP, Compustat), CapitalIQ, CBInsights among others. Experience working in an academic setting, in particular a business school environment, preferred but not required.
