he Michigan Center for Translational Pathology is looking for a Research Laboratory Specialist Associate to perform several duties related to cancer biology experiments in mice and zebrafish. Relevant skills include basic cell culture, DNA/ RNA/ protein isolation from tissues and cells, western blot and qPCR. With respect to animal experiments themselves, the job will include PCR genotyping, preparing mice for procedures, giving anesthesia, dissections, performing injections (subcutaneous, intra-peritoneal, intra-venous and oral gavage); xenograft implantation (subcutaneous, intra-venous, kidney capsule), castration surgeries, monitoring tumor growth by calipers, and bioluminescent tumor imaging. Individual will perform these diverse duties as a member of a team of investigators.
Develop, design and conduct research projects.
Maintenance of a transgenic mouse colony.
Tumor xenografting via subcutaneous, intraperitoneal, renal capsule, and orthotopic placement.
Tumor growth monitoring by direct measurement or imaging.
Pre-operative preparation and performance of aseptic surgery, including orchiectomy, tumor implantation and tumor resection.
Administration of therapeutic drugs via subcutaneous, intraperitoneal, oral gavage and intravenous delivery.
Mouse necropsy/ tissue sample collection
Processing, paraffin embedding and sectioning of histological samples
The position also includes bench work encompassing cell culture (in xenograft preparation) and PCR (for genotyping). Detailed record keeping—including maintaining a weekly animal inventory, breeding/ genotype data, and experimental procedure logs—is important as well.

Bachelor’s degree or higher with specialization in cell biology or a related field
Ability to function independently as well as a team member in a team setting
1-3 years’ experience in cell culture, DNA/RNA/protein isolation, PCR genotyping, qPCR, Western blotting
Animal experience mandatory; must be able to perform in an environment with exposure to animals, animal dander, animal byproducts, and bedding materials.
Willing to perform some tasks associated with zebrafish colony maintenance (no prior zebrafish experience necessary)
Willing to have some schedule flexibility (and occasionally work on weekends)
