Tenure or Clinical-track Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor - Analytical Chemist
Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
The College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University (ISU), in Ames, Iowa, is seeking applications for a full-time Tenure or Clinical track Assistant, Associate or Full Professor position in the department of Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine (VDPAM).Â The qualifications, documented experience and interest of the selected candidate will determine appropriate rank.
This position will be actively engaged in professional practice, research, teaching and institutional service. The primary responsibility of this position will be to manage ISU Veterinary Diagnostic Labâs (VDL) Analytical Service Laboratories (e.g. Toxicology, Nutrition, Clinical Pharmacology, and Forensic Testing Applications).Â Specifically, this position will play a leadership role as part of a team of chemists that develop, implement and conduct quantitative analyses of compounds in a wide variety of biological specimens using state-of the art Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS), Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS), Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES), Ion Chromatography, High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), and a variety of other wet-chemistry technologies for clinical diagnostic, research and forensic applications.Â
The position will also provide technical mentorship, supervision, and direct assistance to the ISU VDLâs team of chemists responsible for using these advanced analytical chemistry tools to detect and quantify drugs, toxins, elements, chemical adulterants and protein biomarkers in clinical specimens submitted to the ISU VDL.Â Additional responsibilities may include assisting with routine sample analysis, coordinating day-to-day tuning and maintenance of equipment, development and implementation of new analytical methods, ensuring the Analytical Service Laboratories compliance in quality assurance activities as required for American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians and any test-specific International Organization for Standardization and Good Laboratory Practices accreditation requirements, training others in proper use of the equipment and procedures and training students that may be working in the laboratory.
The successful candidate must possess strong interpersonal and organizational skills in order to direct and work as part of a team and have exceptional time management skills to be able to operate effectively in a high throughput, deadline-driven environment.Â The ability to prioritize and schedule sample flows on multiple instruments, communicate effectively through speaking, writing reports and standard operating procedures to clearly explain and document results and show great attention to detail are essential to this position.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
- An advanced academic degree (MS, PhD, or equivalent) in Chemistry or related field.
In addition, the following appointments will require:
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR: Evidence of experience conducting research or other scholarly activity.
ASSOCIATE OR FULL PROFESSOR: A record of experience and scholarship appropriate to each rank at Iowa State University.
CLINICAL ASSOCIATE OR FULL PROFESSOR: Additional years of experience in a progressive, high quality analytical chemistry lab, diagnostic lab, or university, appropriate to each rank.
- Post-graduate experience in a high-throughput industry, or academic analytical chemistry laboratory environment.
- Experience working with Thermo Scientific and other analytical chemistry instrumentation and software.
- Experience training chemists in analytical chemistry methods, including advanced mass spectrometric, gas and liquid spectrometry, and chromatography testing techniques.
- Demonstrated ability to lead a team of analytical chemists.
- Demonstrated scientific experience developing new methods, troubleshooting existing methods, conducting successful experiments and drawing conclusions with evidence of a significant record of success over a five year period.
Department/Program & College Description:
VDPAM was created in 1997 to strategically grow the resources and emphasis in production animal medicine at the ISU College of Veterinary Medicine. VDPAM consists of approximately 55 faculty and 120 staff and many of our faculty and staff serve food animal agriculture through the ISU Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory.Â A national leader in protecting animal and human health, the full-service laboratories at the VDL process 75,000 to 85,000 cases each year and conduct 1.25 million tests annually. Fully accredited by the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians, the VDL provides quality diagnostic services for animal species, including necropsy, bacteriology, serology, histopathology, virology, parasitology, molecular diagnostics, and toxicology as well as offering analytical services.
