Computer Operator I (Part-time), School of Computer Science (SCS)-2014088
The SCS Computing Facilities group within the School of Computer Science is seeking to hire a Computer Operator. This part-time position is responsible for providing computer room operational support and user hotline telephone support for a large base of Unix and Windows computers for the School of Computer Science. You will be part of a team providing round-the-clock operational service, multi-platform system backups, and distributed printing support.
Your core responsibilities will include:
Operate computers and computer-related equipment to complete work assignments, i.e., operate multiple control console, on line terminals, laser and line printers and forms-handling equipment;
Monitor control consoles for deviations from standard and to check the status of operations;
Detect job errors or equipment failure;
Manipulate controls to rearrange job sequence in order to determine the point of equipment or program failure;
For routine problems, take appropriate corrective or preventive action; for non-routine problems, refer problem to Computer Operator II, supervisor or appropriate hardware, software or data communications personnel;
Perform file system backups and restorations;
Label incoming tapes;
Enter transactions into on-line tape library system or other records;
Log events of shift, included system malfunctions and disruptions, into log book and create shift reports for supervisory review.
You may interact with system users, answering questions and responding to special requests; you may also assist in resolving operational problems with users, coordinating proposed solutions with supervisor, hardware, software and data communications personnel. You will be part of a 7-day per week/24-hour per day operation. This position will work shifts, including weekends and holidays, and overtime, if necessary.
You may be required to work unsupervised and to oversee the work of part-time operators.
This position is for the midnight-8:00AM shift with the possibility of daytime project work.
Associate's degree in computer science or other relevant field;
Some experience with computer repair and working with operating systems.
