Medical Assistants (MAs) perform duties to assist health care professionals in the examination and treatment of patients, including: prepare the patient and the environment for treatment; meet the communication needs of patients and family; conduct basic diagnostic tests; provide patient care coordination, patient education and clerical/reception functions. RESPONSIBILITIES:CLINIC FLOWMonitor and manage the flow of patients in the clinic throughout the dayDemonstrate the ability to be organized and effectively prioritize work tasks for the needs of the clinicPATIENT CARE PROCEDURESPerform direct patient care procedures according to their level of education, certification, and clinic protocolProvide skilled assistance to providers performing patient care procedures in the clinicPerform vitals on all patientsProvide accurate, appropriate, and culturally sensitive education to clinic patientsPerform patient care responsibilities considering needs specific to the standard of care for patient's agePATIETN CARE - SAFETYMaintain infection control standards including hand hygiene and appropriate use of personal protective attireRespond appropriately to patients in physical distress or emergency situationsCOORDINATION OF CAREAssist providers and RNs in the maintenance of clinic processes to ensure timely follow-up on reported test resultsAssist with coordination of care including clarifying patient follow-up and scheduling patient appointmentsDOCUMENTATIONAccurately and thoroughly document provision of patient care in a timely mannerMaintain, complete and submit required clinic reports and audits in a timely mannerBILLING PRACTICESDemonstrate general understanding of billing practicesRECEPTION/APPOINTMENT SCHEDULINGEmploy excellent customer service skillsSchedule appointment consistent with patient needs and clinic guidelinesMay accept and process co-paysVerify insurance electronicallyTELEPHONE SUPPORTAnswer telephone in a professional, courteous, and efficient manner according to UWMC telephone service standards; directs calls as appropriateGather information on the telephone re:nature of patient concern; triage appropriately; may create telephone encounter in EpicCareCommunicate information about medical center programs to patients, referral agencies/providers, departments, and communitiesCommunicate basic information to patient such as insurance, parking, driving directions, etc.GENERAL DUTIESPerforms administrative duties as required by clinic needsReview email daily to stay current with clinic communicationMaintain the physical environment for infection control and safety of staff and patients and for aesthetic presentation of the area Respond to facility and environmental emergencies according to established proceduresInventory and order office supplies, clinic supplies, formsSort and distribute faxes and mail on a daily basisEnsure daily functioning of office equipmentUtilize on-line resources as required according to clinic practice and within University guidelinesPerform other related duties as requiredREQUIREMENTS:Completion of a Medical Assistant course accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) or other recognized regional or national accreditation board;ORequivalent education/experience.Legal Requirement:Must be Washington State Medical Assistant-Certified or achieve this designation during the probationary period.
