Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking an Instructional Designer for Department of Teaching and Learning with Technology (TLT). This position reports to the Director of Instructional Design within TLT. The Instructional Designer (ID) collaborates with faculty and staff in the design and development of online, hybrid, and face-to-face courses involving use of a learning management system.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Conducts needs assessment, analyzes data, and makes recommendations regarding instructional best practices and learning technologies.
Provides guidance and training in the development and implementation of effective learning strategies.
Assists with conducting routine needs assessments of each course – content, materials, design, presentation, accessibility, delivery, software configuration, security procedures, etc.
Assists with faculty/student training initiatives including but not limited to: LMS specific training, Universal Design and accessibility training, and Teaching one of our online course certificate courses.
Explores new pedagogical opportunities and innovations, and how to integrate them with online/classroom instruction.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Requires a minimum of a Bachelor's degree
A minimum of two years of experience in the use of instructional technology to enhance teaching.
At least first level (APPQMR) Quality Matters certified.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Requires knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques of designing, developing, delivering, and evaluating educational programs; training techniques; current technologies; instructional technologies; various hardware and operating systems; networking systems; and various software packages.
Requires good interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
Must have the ability to facilitate and present instructional material
Must assess technology and software programs and identify advantages and limitations of using various technologies for instructional purposes
Effectively demonstrate the use of instructional applications; effectively communicate technical information to a non-technical audience; and establish cooperative working relationships
Requires a strong understanding of Learning Management Systems (Canvas, eCollege, Blackboard, Moodle, and Sakai)
Second level (Peer Reviewer) Quality Matters Certification is strongly preferred. This certification allows our office to conduct official QM Online Course Reviews.
Experience teaching an online course within the last 18 months is a requirement to obtain the certification. As such, online teaching experience is strongly preferred.
Experience using technologies to produce multimedia content (Camtasia, Powtoons, Adobe Premier Pro, Final Cut, Avid, Adobe After Effects) or content creation tools (Adobe Captivate or Articulate Storyline).
Prior employment in an academic setting or experience working directly with higher education staff and/or faculty.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Many instructors do not work typical hours, hence, there may be instances where the instructional designers will be required to work on projects outside of the normal work day.
