The Evening Nurse is the key health care provider responsible for nursing assessment, direct nursing care, and appropriate medical record documentation for all students who are cared for at the Student Health Center during clinical work hours. This position will cover the 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. shift on a temporary basis for specific dates when additional coverage is required, October through December 2019. The Evening Nurse needs to be comfortable working alone to provide nursing assessment and care, with a medical and counseling provider on call/available by phone, and ER backup for true emergencies. On weekdays other staff works until 5 PM. On weekends there is no other staff on site.

The Evening Nurse assists the physician/ physician assistant as needed during scheduled appointment hours, and is responsible for follow through on evaluation/ treatment orders and medical record documentation.
The Evening Nurse is responsible for nursing assessment, direct nursing care, assisting students with meals, carrying out evaluation/ treatment orders, and appropriate medical record documentation for students cared for in the SHC Infirmary.
The Evening Nurse has shared responsibility with the other nurses and administrative staff in the Student Health Center for maintaining supplies, records, facility and other necessary functions for continued smooth operations of a 24/7 college health service.
The Evening Nurse must be physically capable of performing the job duties. Must have the ability to help lift and move patients as well as the ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop and stretch for prolonged periods. Must be able to see color changes on patients’ skin, have the ability to listen to heart and lung sounds through a stethoscope and feel skin temperature and palpate pulses. Vital sensory abilities include near vision, far vision, perceptual speed, visual color discrimination, depth perception, and hearing sensitivity. Motor abilities are vital. Must be able to manipulate equipment in a safe and effective way. Finger dexterity, arm-hand steadiness, and manual dexterity are vital abilities. Must be able to communicate with patients, families, and other health care workers. Speech clarity, speech recognition and written expression are vital abilities for performing the job.
Other duties as assigned.
This position requires current R.N. licensure for nursing practice in Virginia, current CPR certification, pertinent clinical experience and knowledge of current health care practices, dedication to continuing professional education, and the ability to work independently with on-call healthcare provider/counselor backup. Professional demeanor, excellent clinical and interpersonal skills, and a consistent record of attendance and punctuality are necessary. This position requires strong verbal and written communication skills, the personal maturity to deal effectively with ill and/or troubled students, maintain confidentiality of personal health information, and work effectively as a professional staff member on a multidisciplinary healthcare team. The work for this position is varied and fast-paced, and juggling multiple priorities can be demanding. All staff members are expected to promote a professional, welcoming, and efficient atmosphere in the Student Health Center.
