The Associate Director for Communications and Strategy at the Center for the Study of the American South leads the work to deliver the Center's scholarship and research directly to public audiences, including the work of the Southern Oral History Program (SOHP), Southern Cultures (SC), and the pan-University Southern Futures initiative. He or she will extend the Center's academic work to impact local, regional, and national issues. Communicating with partners is an important aspect of this leadership, and the Associate Director will set, guide and implement the strategy for all such communications activities including: messaging and content development, website, news media placement, social media, and collateral materials designed to advance the partnerships that enhance the Center's research and publication, increase its visibility, and engage its target audiences. The Associate Director will support purposeful partnerships with on- and off-campus partners to bring community concerns in direct relationship to the Center's research and publication work. The Associate Director will assist the Director in implementing organization-wide strategic plans. Reporting to the Center's Director, this position is part of the Center's leadership team and is responsible for a communications budget. This position will supervise a permanent employee (to be hired), undergraduate interns, and/or independent contractors.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
The ideal candidate must have excellent written and verbal communication skills; the ability to work under tight deadlines with input from multiple stakeholders; an extensive knowledge of visual communication techniques, and a working knowledge of and facility with social media platforms and analytic tools. Candidates must possess demonstrated knowledge of and ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures. Knowledge of Southern studies, including arts, politics, literature, history, ecologies and other fields is helpful, but a sincere interest in the field, and a willingness to educate oneself, is mandatory. The ideal candidate must also have a high attention to detail, strong organizational skills, ability to work well on multiple overlapping projects and deadlines, have strong interpersonal communication skills, and a willingness and ability to jump between tasks on short notice. The candidate will have a demonstrated ability to convert creative ideas into visual statements that distill broad themes and attracting new audiences to CSAS events, publications, and research. In addition, the selected candidate will have experience with Adobe Creative Suite (including Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Premiere, and Lightroom), Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), social media scheduling platforms (such as Tweetdeck, Buffer, or Hootsuite), Wordpress, HTML.
A Master’s degree in a related field, including communications, media, journalism, Southern Studies or allied disciplines is strongly preferred. Other highly preferred qualifications include: communications, public relations and/or marketing experience, especially related to the direction/oversight of programs that focus the academic and research resources of a higher education institution towards community or regional issues; experience in higher education and/or the arts – particularly in a changing regional, national and international higher education environment – or in non-profit organizations, government or public service; and previous experience working with and in service to diverse types of southern communities.
