Rice University (Houston, TX) is seeking temporary seasonal readers for the 2020-2021 undergraduate admission application reading season. Under the supervision of a deputy director of admission, the temporary seasonal readers are expected to commit 15-30 hours per week (including training) to reviewing 1500-2000 freshmen applications from early December through early March. The application evaluation process is a committee-based approach, taking into consideration each applicant's academic credentials, contributions to school and community and ability to contribute to and benefit from Rice's diverse educational atmosphere. In keeping with this holistic philosophy, the readers will be responsible for reviewing high school transcripts, standardized test scores, personal essays, recommendation letters, and other application documents.
The temporary seasonal readers will be paired up with other members of the admission team and review files utilizing the committee based evaluation (CBE) approach. Due to the nature of CBE, readers must maintain steady and frequent contact with the admission office and be receptive to guidance and feedback from team members.
Temporary seasonal readers must be able to pair up with admissions team members between December and early March during the hours of 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and/or 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and some Saturdays. The temporary seasonal readers must attend a two-day reader training and be ready to begin reviewing files by early December. Rice will cover travel expenses associated with training.
Candidates must have a computer and access to a reliable, high-speed internet connection in a private, secure location. Preference will be given to candidates who are able to review applications in-person on the Rice University campus. We cannot consider candidates who currently work closely with high school students or college admission professionals including high school guidance counselors and independent consultants. This position is not eligible for Rice benefits.
