Use professional engineering concepts to perform moderately complex engineering assignments. Works in a specialized engineering field on a major training and / or research effort. Works on assignments of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors.
Under general supervision of the CER Senior PI and research staff, incumbent supports both on-campus and off-campus experimental fusion plasma physics research activities. Serve as the engineering resource staff specialist for experimental programs in engineering design and analysis, as well as participating in the planning, budgeting, scheduling, development, production, testing and commissioning of new projects. Responsible for repairs and maintenance of existing experimental facilities, as needed.
Provides engineering and technical support services to CER research scientists, technical staff, graduate and undergraduate students, as well as external research collaborators engaged in CER's major international multi-funded research effort in plasma physics and energy research. Assists in managing the successful design, development, testing, repairs, maintenance, and coordinating the integration of various unique, and state of the art scientific plasma physics devices on the UCSD campus and at off-site and international collaboration locations.
Participates in the accomplishments of system effectiveness, performance, reliability, and feasibility required to meet experimental research goals and objectives of various international multi-funded research projects. Provides engineering support to principal investigators or other key research staff. Participates in making presentations at meetings or conferences that involve CER, facilities, subcontractors, or collaborators engaged in energy research or engineering.

B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Sciences or equivalent area; and/or equivalent experience/training.
Working knowledge of engineering principles and methods to independently perform professional engineering design work of limited scope and complexity. Knowledge of specialized design work as well as the overall field.
Demonstrated experience in product design, engineering blueprint development, and geometric tolerances.
Experience in developing and maintaining the budgets for the selection and procurement of Plasma Physics and materials research experiment equipment.
Demonstrated ability to plan, develop, and fabricate engineering systems.
Proficient in using Windows, Unix and Mac OS operating systems.
Effective written and verbal communication skills. Excellent communication skills to convey complex information in a clear and concise manner.
Ability to work in a collaborative manner, to assist in identifying any challenges or barriers. Ability to analyze research experiment problems and execute, recommend effective solutions.
Strong organizational abilities and decision-making to prioritize work assignments. Ability to begin independent application of principles, practices and procedures in the completion of assignments.
