General Description

The English Language Coordinator is directly responsible for the academic and administrative organization of the English language program and developing and overseeing the English language curriculum and instruction. The coordinator may also provide academic support for the Summer and Pre-Term programs and the Writing Center.

Reporting to the Director of the SAIS Language Program, the candidate will:

• Oversee the English Language Program (ELP) and serve as the primary point of contact for all inquiries from students, faculty, and administration concerning English language instruction and assessment
• Teach a minimum of two advanced-level courses of English each fall and spring semester, with a specific emphasis on the development of written and oral skills for academic purposes through content-based instruction in topics of International Relations
• Develop the curriculum and instructional materials of the ELP in topics relevant to the study of International Relations
• Prepare and design English language placement and proficiency exams and administer them with support from certified language examiners
• Advise students on language progress and ensure they are enrolled in appropriate level coursework--making progress toward proficiency
• Supervise and evaluate the English language faculty (4-6 instructors) to ensure sufficient delivery of the curriculum and quality of instruction
• Deliver training workshops to the English language faculty, as needed
• Recruit and recommend hiring, renewals and cancellations of English part-time and adjunct faculty, and language examiners
• Work with the SAIS Europe English language coordinator on program consistency and student transition between campuses
• Oversee English language testing for newly admitted students to determine whether attendance in a supplementary pre-entry program is necessary
• Oversee, coordinate, and teach in the pre-entry program in August--for additional compensation (preferred, but not required)

In conjunction with the Office of Academic Affairs, oversee the operation and services of the SAIS Writing Center:

• Hire, train, and supervise writing tutors
• Develop writing resources and offer workshops for targeted student populations
• Work with faculty to address student writing needs
• Hold individual consultations with students in need of writing assistance, as time permits
