The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library seeks an energetic, innovative, and student-centered individual to provide leadership in the area of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) librarianship. Under the general guidance of the Faculty Director for Instruction and User Services, the STEM Librarian will develop, deliver, and assess library instruction to students; collaborate with teaching faculty to determine collection needs and to implement information literacy initiatives; and enhance the library’s capacity to support the curricular and research needs of the university’s STEM departments, programs, faculty, staff, and students. As a faculty member, the incumbent engages in library and university governance and scholarship, which includes research, scholarly, and creative activities required for tenure and promotion.
Support student learning across the various science/engineering/math disciplines by working with faculty to facilitate the effective use of curriculum-specific information resources and to embed information literacy into instruction
Select and evaluate resources supporting the curricular and research needs of STEM students, faculty, and programs
Conduct subject-specific research consultations
Support STEM faculty, graduate student, and undergraduate research through the various research lifecycle stages
Establish and develop close relationships with STEM department faculty members through active liaison work
Develop pedagogically appropriate materials to support STEM student success including digital learning objects
Assist with the development and implementation of assessment initiatives aimed at improving student learning, services, and collections in the STEM disciplines
Identify and support the information needs and learning preferences of a diverse student population
Participate in and represent the library in outreach activities which include workshops, orientations, tours, and other events
Provide reference and research services in a variety of formats
Provide instruction and develop appropriate instructional materials for synchronous and asynchronous modalities
Stay current and actively involved with developments in the library profession and particularly within the STEM disciplines
Participate in the library liaison program, providing services to assigned departments
Participate in multidisciplinary teams, library governance, professional development activities, and university service
Build a record of progressive scholarly and professional achievement to fulfill the University requirement of retention, tenure, and promotion
Master's degree from an ALA accredited program or equivalent is required at time of appointment.
Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations, as gained through cross-cultural study, training, teaching or other comparable experiences, for the provision of user-centered services, systems and programs.
Experience or coursework with library resources relevant to the research, teaching, and learning of science, technology, engineering, or mathematics.
Experience and/or coursework in delivering information literacy instruction.
Evidence of potential to maintain an ongoing program of scholarly research and professional development at appropriate levels.
Demonstrated ability to plan, design, implement, and assess STEM-specific library services
Experience with providing librarian support for STEM disciplines
Undergraduate or graduate degree or equivalent training/work experience in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics.
Experience in assessment to ensure continuous evaluation and improvement.
Experience with designing, promoting, and integrating library services and resources to support the research lifecycle in STEM disciplines
Salary Range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience. Starting Date: Spring 2020/Summer 2020 Eligibility: Employment is contingent upon proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
