This position performs a wide range of fiscal functions for the Rutgers University–Camden Campus and post-award administration support services for the University's sponsored funds. These fiscal functions include general accounting, contract accounting for sponsored awards, and budgeting. This position will specialize with a concentration in sponsored projects in an effort to support campus units as assigned.
Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to monitoring and forecasting revenues and expenditures related to external funds and creating monthly and ad-hoc reporting as requested. Incumbent must be able to interpret contract language, compliance regulations, prepare financial statements and prepare written internal reports on the financial impact of sponsored activities. Incumbent will provides independent analysis of financial data and will be required to understand contract parameters in order to monitor financial and operational risks.
Day-to-day include but are not limited to purchasing approvals, payroll charging instructions or approvals, journal entries or journal approvals, etc. This position has a customer-service focus and will be required to interface with faculty, staff and senior leadership.
Consistent with a broad understanding of the mission, vision, role, and goals of the business unit, the tasks and responsibilities of the Accounting/Business Specialist will be required to achieve business unit goals working under minimal supervision within establish work parameters. On occasion, this position will carry out non-routine tasks with or without review of work outputs by supervisor.
The incumbent will perform professional work requiring knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and a solid understanding and application of concepts, theories, principles, practices, terminology, and applied basis of accounting. In addition, the incumbent will be required to apply knowledge of research accounting principles (e.g. 2 CFR Part 200 – Uniform Administrative Requirements, Cost Principles and Audit Requirements) to ensure sponsored projects accurately reflect the terms of the award and are in compliance with Federal and State regulations.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Requires a Bachelor's degree preferably in accounting, finance, business administration, or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience that demonstrates knowledge and understanding of generally accepted accounting principles and practices (GAAP). Also requires a minimum of two years relevant experience in a University financial/accounting function.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Good interpersonal, communication skills and computer literacy to include proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Access and Outlook). Must be skilled in understanding database structure and have the ability to manipulate data imports and exports for financial reporting and analysis.
Master's degree preferred. Experience working in a higher education environment strongly preferred. An in-depth understanding of the current Rutgers University Systems: Oracle PeopleSoft and Discoverer preferred. Strong preference will be given to candidates with knowledge of Responsibility Center Management, Tableau, Oracle ERP Cloud, and Oracle Hyperion Planning software. Special consideration will be given to candidates representing advanced command of VBA in excel (macros).
Specialized equipment for the incumbent will be in the shape of the software identified above.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Prolonged computer utilization and long periods in sedentary positioning.
Salary: Starting salary will be commensurate with experience and within departmental budgets.
