Full time appointment in Film, Video and Moving Image Art. The Film and Video Department of Maryland Institute College of Art invites applications for this full-time faculty position with a multi-year renewable contract in a non-tenure institution beginning Fall 2020.Â
The department of Film and Video at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) seeks applications for a full-time, renewable appointment in film, video and moving image art, broadly defined. MICA seeks a candidate with a studio background in film and video, along with knowledge of film and media studies to advance and diversify MICAâs current curriculum. The successful candidate will contribute to the continuing development of curriculum in the film and video department, stemming from the combination of production and the intersection of theory and practice. Â Â The candidate will guide the artistic development of undergraduate students, whose film and art work is facilitated by a robust knowledge of technology to inform their creative practice. We seek a candidate who can cover a broad topical range in their studio teaching and is motivated by a variety of filmmaking genres and moving image art forms.
We are also particularly interested in candidates who can speak to intersectional issues, including diversity, equity, and inclusion. The successful candidate will engage with transnational flows and processes of cultural exchange and address popular culture. The successful candidate will work to develop curriculum as well as help form relationships with local community partners, and engage in innovative modes of instruction.
This faculty member will teach 18 credits per year (three courses per semester) at an art and design school nationally known for its dedication to teaching excellence, a rigorous liberal arts curriculum and for preparing students for successful creative careers. The candidate will be capable of teaching at all levels of undergraduate film and video education, including MICAâs First Year Experience
In addition to teaching, all full-time faculty are expected to pursue research and/or professional engagements that contribute to the educational mission of the Department and College. Faculty are also required to meaningfully contribute in a variety of areas that include: all aspects of departmental operations and institutional governance including departmental management, advising, institutional and departmental committee service, and scheduled departmental and student activities.
BFA or BA in related field
Teaching experience at the college level beyond graduate assistantships
Strong record of professional excellence as demonstrated by a portfolio of work and a record of exhibition/festival or equivalent professional experienceÂ
Personal commitment to teaching on an undergraduate level using pedagogical approaches that are relevant and responsive to a student body that is rich in diversity across race, ethnicity, gender, and class and their intersections
Accomplished in a broad range of production and post-production techniques within film and video
Capable of teaching at all levels of undergraduate film and video education including MICAâs First Year Experience
Project management skills â the ability to coordinate community-based projects, class-sized collaborative events, and/or research
Ability to work in a collaborative environment, participating in advising, institutional and departmental committee service, and scheduled departmental and student activities
Knowledgeable about contemporary film, art and theory and their relationship to broader social, cultural, economic, scientific, and technological contextsÂ
Shows promise or proven ability to enrich the aims for diversity, equity, and justice of the Film and Video department and the College
