Staff Accountant, General Accounting Office - Georgetown University
The General Accounting Office (GAO) is charged with the responsibility to accurately report and timely provide, meaningful financial information and advice to the University community to support management decision-making, and to demonstrate fiscal responsibility and accountability and regulatory compliance to the University's various constituents. The Office promotes the efficient use and stewardship of University resources and compliance with laws, regulations and reporting requirements through technical financial and analytical skills, and expertise in accounting knowledge.
The Staff Accountant is responsible for various duties related to long term debt, construction and software project, journal entry processing, balance sheet monitoring and other tasks on as needed basis. Specific duties include but are not limited to the following:
Long term Debt - Responsible for processing debt related journal entries. These include Bonds (principal and interest), SWAPS (mark to market and credit adjustments), restricted cash, market value adjustments of debt related investments and other commercial loans. The Staff Accountant reviews leases in accordance with the most current lease guidance. On an annual basis, the Staff Accountant assists in the preparation of long term debt footnote disclosures, prepares debt service indenture reports, and provides the information needed to formulate arbitrage reports.
Project Accounting - The Staff Accountant conducts work in progress capital expense analysis and works closely with the Contracts Department to ensure that completed projects are capitalized. The Staff Accountant prepares project funding journals as well as project close out journals on completed projects. The Staff Accountant prepares monthly construction in process (CIP) reporting and analysis and ensures proper maintenance of capital projects records. The Staff Accountant is also responsible for monitoring the university's software project funding.
Balance Sheet Monitoring. The Staff Accountant reviews and prepares monthly reconciliations of assigned balance sheet accounts, researches and resolves reconciling items in a timely manner. The Staff Accountant has the overall responsibility to ensure that reconciliations are current and performed monthly to support financial statements.
Other Journal Entries - The Staff Accountant is tasked with the completion of other journal entries which include but not limited to deferred compensation, tenant improvement allowance, asset retirement obligation depreciation and expense accretion etc. These journals are prepared in compliance with GAAP guidelines and in adherence to internal controls.
Other Duties - The Staff Accountant is the primary back up for the administration of the accounting process of the University's Property Plant and Equipment to include recording of assets. The Accountant will therefore be expected to cross train in this area.
A Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance is required.
3-5 years progressive accounting experience required.
Intermediate to advanced level Excel skills required
