Potomac State College, part of the West Virginia University system of campuses, located in Keyser, WV is seeking qualified candidates for a Landscape Worker. This position will be responsible for maintaining the exterior appearance of institutional buildings, lawns, plantings, and grounds surrounding the campus.
In order to be successful in this position, the ideal candidate will:
Maintain and care for institutional grounds by: mowing, seeding, and aerating lawns and turf; trimming and edging around trees, flower beds, buildings, and walkways; watering lawns, shrubs, and ornamental gardens during dry periods; removing and disposing of debris throughout grounds area.
Report pest problems on turf, ground covers, flowers, trees, and shrubs. Take care of plants, shrubs, and flowers located throughout campus by: collecting soil samples from grounds and beds to be tested by others to determine deficiencies based upon the specific use for the area; prepare grounds and ornamental beds for planting and seeding, haul and spread topsoil and mix in fertilizer, peat moss, compost, vermiculite, and other additives to condition the soil. Plant ornamentals, flowers, shrubs, and trees regarding depth, distance, and cultural requirements for each to enhance survival rates; trim and prune shrubs and trees, weed and thin ornamental flowers to shape and improve growth. Seed, sod, slice as needed. Interpret blueprints or follow verbal and written instructions in performing skilled landscape maintenance and construction.
Operate, service, and maintain all grounds maintenance equipment such as trucks, tractors, large seeders, riding mowers, snow removal equipment, skid loaders, end loaders, and tilt bed trucks.
Operate, service, and maintain hand power tools and equipment such as weed trimmers, lawnmowers, roto-tillers, chain saws, fertilizer spreaders, small seeders, sod cutters, walk-behind sweepers, vacs, and turf renovators.
Remove snow from sidewalks, steps, road, and parking lots by means of hand tools, power brooms, tractors, and trucks. Spread de-icer and abrasives on all public passageways, as needed. Must be able to respond to emergency situations on all occasions and must be available for telephone contact during all emergency and environmentally unsafe conditions.
Assist in the planting, staking, and removal of trees as needed using pruning saws, loppers, and chain saws.
Assist with event set-ups and other general requests as needed.
Set up plant material for use at special events.
Assist with landscape construction by: operating jackhammers and other related equipment to remove broken sidewalks; mixing, pouring, and spreading concrete, asphalt, gravel, and other materials; digging holes and trenches to assist in the preparation of irrigation and drainage systems; excavating and preparing grounds prior to initiation of construction projects.
Assist in the repair and replacement of utility lines by using hand tools, power tools, and grounds equipment.
Work Hours: 7 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Pay Grade: 10
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience
Education/training in an agriculture/horticulture program preferred
1 year of directly related experience
Experience and license as a private applicator of biocides preferred
Valid driver's license
