We seek a highly-qualified individual who can contribute to field-shaping research, teaching, and community-engaged scholarship in product design. This interdisciplinary major is primarily based on industrial design blended with elements of engineering and business and is the fastest-growing program in the College of Design. The program benefits from location in the Twin Cities, a major metropolitan area with the largest number of Fortune 500 companies per capita, a vibrant and engaged design community, and a strong spirit of entrepreneurship. Contribute to and support the mission of our urban land-grant university through research, teaching, and engagement.
Develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses, including studio and lecture courses, in the product design programs.
Create and grow an internationally competitive scholarship program in product design.
Disseminate scholarship and teaching activities in peer-reviewed venues and/or through entrepreneurial activity.
Pursue external funding to support scholarship.
Advise graduate students and mentor undergraduate students.
Contribute to curriculum development in the product design programs.
Commit to supporting interdisciplinary initiatives in teaching and scholarship, collaborating with members of synergistic fields in the College of Design and across the University.
Work in partnership with faculty across the University to foster innovation, cultivate strategic business collaborations, advance Minnesota’s economy, and enhance the University’s ability to produce breakthrough research that addresses society’s greatest challenges.
Participate in governance at the program, department, college, and university levels.
We are lookng for an Assistant (tenure-track) or Associate (tenured/tenure-track) Professor in Product Design. Nine-month, 100% time, academic year appointment. Anticipated start date is August 31, 2020. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications.
A terminal graduate degree by the start date, with at least one degree in industrial design, product design, or a related field.
Evidence of a clear vision for an active research or creative scholarship program and a strategy to procure external funding.
Demonstrated potential to develop and teach design studio and other core and elective courses at undergraduate and graduate levels
Evidence of strong collaborative and interpersonal skills.
A strategy for developing connections with business, related professions, and communities beyond the University.
Demonstrated leadership skills.

Preferred In addition to the essential qualifications:
Earned doctorate or a Master’s of Industrial Design by the start date.
Demonstrated commitment to sustainability and sustainable design practices.
Expertise in prototyping and manufacturing, IoT, user experience, and/or entrepreneurship.
Record of scholarship or creative production in peer-reviewed venues.
Record of successful grant awards.
Record of innovative teaching in product design.
Evidence of diversity and inclusion in teaching and/or scholarship or creative production.
Experience in program and curricular development in undergraduate and graduate education.
Evidence of collaboration with colleagues in multiple academic disciplines.
Industry experience in the development of products (including physical or digital goods or services).
