Advertised Summary Job Description: ABOUT S-PREP AT COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY The State Pre-College Enrichment Program (S-PREP) is a free high school and college preparation program for 7th -12th grade students who are interested in pursuing a career in medicine or related STEM fields. The long range objective of the program is to increase the number of underrepresented minorities in healthcare and STEM professions. The program offers enrichment courses geared towards preparing students for success in math and science. The program also offers career development workshops, college counseling services, field trips and college tours. The program will commence in October, 2018 and will be hosted through May, 2019.
The Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs at Columbia University, Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons is currently seeking Tutors to provide academic support for middle and high school students who are participating in the 2018-2019 State Pre-College Enrichment Program. Tutoring sessions will be held at the Vagelos Education Center at Columbia University Irving Medical Center.
Tutoring sessions provided for S-PREP participants are designed to improve student success in program sessions as well as home institution classes, increase subject-specific retention, and contribute to overall academic development.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Tutors' responsibilities will include, but are not limited to: -Provide tutoring services for SPREP students in small groups or 1:1 sessions; -Meet with students to review and complete homework assignments in respective math/science subject area(s); -Identify specific topics and/subject content that present challenges for students; -Assist students with test preparation and Regents review sessions; -Provide feedback regarding students' performance for bi-annual evaluations; -Provide recommendations for program improvements; -Administrative and clerical duties as assigned.
General Minimum Qualifications: High school graduate or equivalency required.
Additional Specific Minimum Qualifications: -Applicant must be a full time Columbia University medical, dental or graduate student; -Education and training in science and/or mathematics required.
Preferred Qualifications: -Prior tutoring experience with middle and high school students and ability to demonstrate strong knowledge of academic content as related to subject matter is strongly desired; -Ideal candidates should be able to establish and maintain effective rapport with students while being sensitive to their academic abilities and needs; -Previous teaching experience extremely helpful, but not necessary.
