The University of Michigan (UM) is seeking an individual for an Engineering post-doctoral fellow position within the Departments of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) and Mechanical Engineering. The candidate will work closely with Dr. James Eckner (PI) and Dr. James A. Ashton-Miller (Co-I), as well as other study co-investigators in PM&R, Statistics, Radiology, Kinesiology, Neurology, and Athletics in support of a single-site NIH-funded mechanistic clinical trial investigating how the neck muscles and neck-strengthening exercise influence head acceleration, a proxy-measure for concussion risk, in high school athletes.
The candidate will administer the laboratory-based components of the study in the University of Michigan Biomechanics Research Laboratory and perform the kinematics- and imaging-based data analyses. The candidate will be expected to exhibit great sensitivity and respect for the confidentiality of all information that is collected from youth participants. He/She must possess a Doctoral degree in Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering, Kinesiology, or an equivalent field; independent problem solving skills; a strong work ethic; and a strong ability to work collaboratively within a large research team. Candidate will also provide lab team supervision and general lab management.
Actively participate in frequent in-person meetings with the PI and Co-I Ashton-Miller, as well as regular whole-team meetings, either in-person or remotely
Manage all electronic study data
Maintain and operate all Biomechanics Research Lab equipment required for data collection during laboratory testing sessions
Administer the laboratory testing protocol to study participants during testing sessions, with oversight of and assistance from supporting research team members.
Perform/oversee raw data processing and analysis, including kinematic and other lab-based data, as well as MRI data
Perform/oversee electronic data entry and assist Statistics Co-I with data analysis
Assist the PI and Co-I’s with results interpretation and dissemination
Assist the study team with other related research tasks as needed
Assist the PI and Engineering Co-I with general lab management and lab team supervision
Doctoral-level degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Kinesiology, or equivalent education and experience
Previous clinical research experience involving human subjects
Comfort working with an adolescent population; prior research experience with this population is preferred
Strong communication skills
Strong organizational and planning skills, including high attention to detail, accuracy, diligence, task-focus, and the ability to carefully administer detailed research protocols
Ability to work cooperatively within a team, and provide oversight to supporting research team members
Competence in basic and advanced software programs, including but not limited to Microsoft Office, research database packages (e.g., RedCap or similar), laboratory software packages (e.g., MatLab, LabView, etc.), medical image analysis software packages (e.g., 3D Slicer or similar), and statistical software packages (e.g., R, SPSS, SAS, etc.)
Independent problem-solving skills
Schedule flexibility with frequent availability outside of usual 8-5 business hours, including evening/weekend hours to accommodate the scheduling needs of high-school aged study participants
